I was discussing one issue related to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development
( CCHD ) with another member and she suggessted that informing the bishop would help to take care of the problem. I beleive, that since the bishops run the program, that they know full well the anti-Church nature of this program and support and encourage the program’s activities. The bishops can only say “…I did not know…” so many times before a person ceases to believe them.

What think you guys?

The bishops do not have direct knowledge of the activities of groups that receive CCHD funds; rather, they rely on boards of laypeople to recommend which groups should be funded.

When I researched this situation in my diocese, I came to the conclusion that these board members were not experts in local development organizations; rather, they were chosen because the bishops found them to be trustworthy. Therefore, oversight of groups that receive funds is limited because the board members only conduct a limited amount of research into their activities.

In the cases where the CCHD was funding groups that engaged in inappropriate activities, the board members discontinued funding these groups in subsequent years once they learned about such activities.

Therefore I recommend being a helpful and persitent informant to the bishops (and to pastors) when evil is uncovered and it’s linked to Church/parish funding. My point to monica earlier was : we (laity) are many while bishops are very few. There is nothing to be gained by compaining abour bishops’ laxity if you aon’t make sure the bishops are INFORMED. My own experience tells me that bishops are usually quite grateful to learn mor einfo.

Who appoints the people to the boards that allows the funding of these dissenting groups?

The bishops are in charge and, is spite of decades of complaints, the CCHD continues to fund Alinsky - type organizations.

Saying “…I did not know…” is a sorry excuse and I do not buy it.

Cardinal George’s office was informed over month in advance of a pro-abortion state rep. being honored with an award named after a known gay activist, at a fundraiser for a CCHD funded organization at a Catholic parish. The event went on as planned.

Bishops might very well want to be informed of dissenting activities, but perhaps they have no intention of doing anything to curb these activities.

Hope you’re spending equal time praying for our bishops.
