Written by Card. Ratzinger (now Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI), approved by Pope (now Saint) John Paul II…

That was then - 2003. Now, 2020, It looks like the wind is blowing in a different direction these days.

The winds of change might shake but they won’t cause the unbroken teaching of the Church to change! 😊

That reads like a song lyric.

As fide said, written by Card. Ratzinger and approved by JPII. Still stands today. Certainly nothing has been changed in writing.

Someone’s opinion may change on an issue but that’s all it is, an opinion.

The God who is timeless does not change His opinion on an intrinsic evil ever, let alone over the span of 17 years because of some need to “get with the times.” God does not follow ‘woke’ culture

The Catholic position is clear. Homosexual activities are sinful and wrong. No matter what anyone says in the future, that is the Christian position and it will not change. We should not change Christianity to fit what we want, rather we should change ourselves to fit what Christianity teaches.

Like how long are you looking at here?
Climate change might destroy the world before that happens.

I just wanted to note that this is one of those interventions described by the CDF in Donum Veritatis that is a mix of fixed principles and contingent circumstances.
  1. Finally, in order to serve the People of God as well as possible, in particular, by warning them of dangerous opinions which could lead to error, the Magisterium can intervene in questions under discussion which involve, in addition to solid principles, certain contingent and conjectural elements. It often only becomes possible with the passage of time to distinguish between what is necessary and what is contingent.
In this case, the opposition to civil unions is based on the contingent element of these civil unions in our time being based on or always implying an immoral sexual relationship (and the opposition to such sexual relationships is of course the fixed principle), but at least theoretically one can imagine a union defined and established in law independently of any sexual relationship that would not run afoul of those fixed principles (such a thing has not yet existed as far as I can tell).

While I agree that the contingencies are still in place that make the CDF document in the OP still very relevant–and the Magisterium has not said otherwise–just because someone else thinks those contingencies can be avoided is not per se contrary to the faith–and the Magisterium could certainly later come to a different decision, while still maintaining what is necessary.

This is indeed very theoretical. Civil unions don’t exist for platonic relationships, or siblings etc., and in many countries such relationships are excluded from civil unions. The assumption behind civil unions is romantic/sexual relationships. Sure, hypothetically that could change. But those who are currently trying to put this idea forward, seemingly to defend the Holy Father, are naive.
You’re correct in what you say, but I just think it’s pretty clear to everyone what the purpose of civil unions are, hypotheticals aside.
Also, even if that were to be the case, for homosexual relationships the Church’s stance would still stand.

You watch, in the near future the church will valid homosexual marriage and at the least accept that abortion might be acceptable in some cases.
What church will do this? Not the One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church! They may turn a blind eye (the way they already never preach about anything morality-based anymore & instead preach on love, kindness, and being good stewards of the environment every Sunday.) The sins you mention may come to be accepted in the churches because priests and bishops are afraid to catechize their flocks. But the deposit of Faith, the Tradition, and the Magisterium will not change. And perhaps it will be up to the well-catechized laity to stand tall and keep teaching the Faith as it has been handed down for 2,000 years. Come hell or high water.

That’s fair enough in regard to the teaching about morality of certain classes of sexual relationships. Whether the CDF document is in that category is a separate matter. But not the relevant matter. The relevant question is the proper means to effect change (if that’s the goal). More than a couple of sentences quoted in a documentary would seem necessary.

Thank goodness, yes!

In the near future some church may well do that. The Church will not. Some may think that that church IS The Church; they will be wrong.

Unfortunately I could see this happening, and in the not too distant future. Not that the Church will err, but schism. Look at what’s happening in Germany.

I think it’s in the process of happening.

What a dangerous time this is, for the faithful! God promises grace, for the end times and the trials to come - but how dangerous!
Mt 24:22 And if those days had not been shortened, no human being would be saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.
Concerning these things, I considered making a thread on this essay in this month’s HPR,
Dangerous, Creeping Globalism in the World and in the Church
– it offers some counsel for the faithful, in these times.

We must remain faithful to the Truth!

Form the document cited:
When legislation in favour of the recognition of homosexual unions is already in force, the Catholic politician must oppose it in the ways that are possible for him and make his opposition known; it is his duty to witness to the truth.
Joe once again suspended his Catholicism for political gain and scandalized the Church.
