His tone may be less alarmist, but the real problems he points out are certainly worthy of alarm. It’s like this synod is promoting another religion.

I certainly agree with you there. Again, what I really appreciated about his text is that he actually quotes from the document itself rather than just decrying “heresy” and “apostasy” without pointing to what exactly was heretical.

That being said, Mueller is also careful to point out that while the text itself is on shaky ground, it’s not irredeemable, and that certain of the questionable things in it can be understood in an orthodox manner. Like him, I’m grateful that this is just a working document and not a final product. And given that it is a working document, it is obviously in need of great revision. The question, really, is whether or not those who drafted the document would submit to such a revision. I’m not holding my breath on that one, and it doesn’t seem that Mueller is either.

Yeah, unless the Holy Spirit decides to intervene big time, it doesn’t seem like anything will be improved. Those working on it seem totally self-referential and have peremptorily dismissed any serious criticism. This passage from the Cardinal sums it up:
This group is immune to serious objections, because such objections could only be based on monolithic doctrinalism and dogmatism , or ritualism (IL 38; 110; 138), as well as on clericalism incapable of dialogue (IL 110), and on the rigid way of thinking of the pharisees and on the pride of reason of the scribes . To argue with such people would just be a loss of time and a wasted effort.

Well, the Holy Spirit has intervened in greater problems in the Church before. The comforting thing is that this is just a local synod. Sure it will have repercussions on the rest of the Church, but it needn’t. Ultimately it may be up to a future pope to undo any potential damage done by this synod. Then again, who knows? The perhaps we’ll be pleasantly surprised…

The self-referential nature of those who drafted the document I do find very bothersome. We saw the problem to a small extent with Amoris Laetitia, although it is relatively easy enough to interpret that document in light of Tradition since it quotes so extensively from the Scriptures, Thomas Aquinas, Pope John Paul II, and Vatican II (among others). But it seems as if the drafters of this IL think that the Church began with Pope Francis. I’ve heard it likened to “intellectual incest” (either that, or I’ve just accidentally coined a phrase that needs to go viral… but I’m not that intelligent…).

Since we had a discussion on Cdl. Brandmueller’s comments over the upcoming synod’s IL, I thought we could also have a discussion on Cdl. Mueller’s comments, which, in my opinion, are much less alarmist and have the advantage of actually quoting from the IL itself.
Thank you. This is a much better view, in terms of having facts to work with.
