I am and have been quite disappointed in what I have seen take place since the 2nd Vatican Council w/ repect to the Liturgy. Who am I to question eh ? Well, anyway…I could go on and on…let’s just say I find attending the Latin Mass to be quite spectacular…although It’s difficult for me to find FSSP Parishes…or, Parishes where the Latin Mass is celebrated…nonetheless, this past Sunday I attended Mass in my Parish and noticed that the Priest/Pastor didn’t come around the Altar and reverently kiss it prior to beginning the Mass. Am I being picky here ? Is this considered a standard practice or am I just being ridiculous…I know that the Sacrament is no less valid w/ the Novus Ordo but I believe that when less is expected less is carried out…from the casual dress at Mass, the seemingly lack of respect for the Eucharist, etc…pls help me to feel better…Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam

Perhaps he had things on his mind and was distracted and forgot to do it. Or he was having back pain and could not bend over (I have seen this with a priest I know). It doesn’t necessarily mean lack of respect.

First of all, the Mass is exactly the same sacrifice of Jesus in the Cross and the institution of the Eucharist. You have to concentrate on it. Any other acts, such as kisses, genuflections, bows, etc. may be traditional but are not the core of the celebration. If you let any secondary matters annoy you and distract you from the core, you’ll miss the point. So don’t waste time trying to find details missing in the Novus Ordo with regard to the so called Traditional Mass. The Novus Ordo is the present-day Traditional Mass. It has been promulgated by the Pope;a Pope with exactly the same authority as St. Pius V or St. Peter, for that matter. And maybe in five centuries hence another Pope will promulgate another Novus Ordo to fit the needs of the new times, and that will be Tradition, too.

Unless you move frequently, you find a TLM mass once, and your done. If its an hour away, so be it.

The priest dedicated his entire life to the church. You complain because he didn’t kiss the altar. Think about your priorities here.

Priests are human and make mistakes. Some are better at some things, and some are better with other things, but they have their limitations - just as we do. Who are we to question?

From “A Habit of Being”

This quote is from a letter written by (Mary) Flannery O’Connor was in response to a son who told his father he could not go to Mass because the priest’s homilies were uninspired:

“It is easy for any child to pick out the faults in the sermon on his way home from Church every Sunday. It is impossible for him to find out the hidden love that makes a man, in spite of his intellectual limitations, his neuroticism, his own lack of strength, give up his life in the service of God’s people, however bumblingly he may go about it…” (pp. 307-308)

(Mary) Flannery O’Connor was an American writer and essayist. These writings are taken from letters she exchanged with a friend, and others.

There are bigger things to get upset about then what could be a simple mistake. Think homilies that go against Catholic moral teaching, having everyone stand during the consecration, irreverent music with questionable lyrics, etc. I know it’s easy to get annoyed about things, I tend to fall prey to the same things. However, we have to remember that not all things are done maliciously or with full knowledge of going against the rubrics. We need to pick our battles, and I think you need to let this one go. We should pray for a more reverent liturgy, because that is the problem, in the way it is typically celebrated, not with the liturgy itself. A OF Mass could look just like an EF if celebrated the way it was intended.

What a perfectly beautiful response. Thank you.

I think my parish priest said it best last Saturday night, about a momentary lapse of memory earlier on: “I’m sorry. I’m getting old.”

At 63 I appreciate that sentiment and have learned, as I age, to forgive more and to judge less.

If a “lapse” continues, then it’s time to ask gently if something is wrong.
