I dont know if any one knows but why are priests sometimes refered to as a celebrant? Where in the Catholic Churches history did this term come from?
 
I assume because they are “celebrating” the Mass.
 
And that in congregational settings many priests can be present, most of whom are not “celebrants” as they are not presiding / celebrating the Mass.

Many times when there are several priests they are referred to as con-celebrants.
