St Francis’ complete love of Jesus manifested in an overwhelming love for all of creation - including Mother Earth (who he referred to as such in his ‘Canticle of the Creatures’).

Remember he refused to let the citizens of Gubbio kill a wolf even though it was killing and eating people Instead he talked to the wolf and ever after called it ‘Brother’.

He absolutely would be disgusted by way we are raping our poor Mother Earth, and the negligent stewardship we are showing of the natural resources God has gifted us with.

Let’s focus on helping the weakest among us, mothers, babies and the sick and elderly. Once they are all cared for, then we can make ourselves feel good by buying our “carbon offsets” (there is nothing in Sacred Scripture about ‘carbon footprints’!).

Animal waste also contaminates drinking water supplies. For example, nitrates often seep from lagoons and sprayfields into groundwater. Exactly. Such issues are not at all unrelated.

And even if they were, since when is it a case of either/or?

After all, Jesus didn’t tell us that it was more important to feed the hungry than to visit the imprisoned, or that we had to choose between clothing the naked and tending the sick.

I completely believe that we all need to work to end abortion - but we must work in many areas that reflect our faith - care for all of creation, concern for the poor of the world, striving to live simply so others may simply live!
