The big problem for a lot of us is that we didn’t have a good foundation. A lot of parents left it up to the Catholic schools in the 70s and 80s, and depending on where you lived, the catechesis you received was poor at best. When I started studying on my own a few years ago, I was shocked by a lot of what I’d read, simply because, after 12 years of Catholic schools, going through pre-Cana with my wife then First Communion and Confirmation preparation with our son and a lifetime of attending Mass, I’d never heard a lot of it. At least now I can work to make sure my kids have a better foundation than I did.
I have heard others say there was poor catechesis also. I know when I studied for confirmation for the episcopal church I felt like I was so lost and didn’t understand half of what it all meant. I thought catholic preparation would have been better. did it all change after Vatican II in the 60’s do you think? in my family, we were never encouraged to go to church, even after being confirmed. it was almost like a rite of passage more than making a commitment to a Christian life.

From what I’ve experienced and read, Vatican II seems to be the big tipping point. I know things are getting better now in a lot of areas, but I’ve often questioned why my kids’ schools don’t have catechism classes or a little more focus on the basics. I know we’re supposed to be their first and primary teachers, but when my kids come home and tell me they either skipped the key points on a topic or were taught something not quite right, I get a little frustrated. The one positive is that I know enough to correct them or fill in the gaps. I’ve also worked hard at making up for a lot of the shortcomings of our older son’s religious education (12 years of Catholic schools). As a result, he can tell you more about what the Church teaches about marriage than my wife or I could have fresh out of pre-Cana (and, honestly, that’s not saying much because our pre-Cana was a joke).

Congrats, OP! 👍

I’m at 9 years since coming over from the Lutheran church (ELCA).

It’s a good thing, isn’t it? 😃

Congratulations and may God bless you will abundant grace!
thank you. I feel I have really been tested these past 5 years. I have suffered through the economy and broke my ankle and leg in 3 places 2 years ago and have almost fallen into financial ruin and am fighting my way back now. if God can get me through this, it will be a miracle!! the woman who worked with me one on one for 6 weeks before I was received (I was coming from the episcopal church so they put me on a fast track) warned me that after being received I might be attacked and I think she was right. I was one of those critical of the Catholic church for many years until I began realizing that there was no authority in the protestant churches and how broken they were. so I am sure the evil one is very unhappy the Catholic church won me over. 🙂

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in our day of battle;
be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray:
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God,
cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits
who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.
