Celebrating St. Gianna Beretta Molla's feast day

Just wanted to say happy St. Gianna day to everyone! If you haven’t heard of her, she is a new saint, canonized in 2004 who was a pediatrician and mother to 3 who refused an abortion which would have saved her life. She has many miracles attributed to her and is a patron saint of mothers and the unborn.

Thanks for this. I went to St. Gianna’s in Tuscon for this past Easter Vigil Mass. I didn’t realize she was the “patroness of pro-life causes”. Then it hit me (just now) - Gianna is the name of that woman who survived an abortion attempt - Gianna Jessen. I suppose she was named after the now St. Gianna (2004). She sang on EWTN, and she was pretty good. And after the song she said: “I am a partial birth abortion.” I was looking at my computer screen when she said that, and I’m still wearing a neck brace! Here’s another story on her:

I did not remember that yesterday was her feast day. My daughter took her name for Confirmation and just did a report on her. There are some excellent books on her life, that are very inspiring to mothers and to pro-life activists. One that my daugther and I enjoyed is called "Saint Gianna Molla: Wife, Mother, Doctor ".

Does anyone know how to pronounce her name right? :o If I have a baby girl I would like to use the name Gianna.

We know someone whose granddaughter is named Gianna. They pronouce it “Jee-Ah-Na” with an emphasis on the second syllable. This is how my daughter pronounced it at her Confirmation also. St. Gianna’s full name was Giovanna Francesca.

In the US I hear it prononced Jee-Ah-Na as above or Jee Anna.

In Italy it would be pronounced something like John-Nah.
