Hi
With New Year’s coming in two hours over here, people are already firing gunshots to celebrate. Is one obligated to report them to the police?

But if you know who they are, I would. People can be hurt unless they are shooting special ammo designed to make a noise, but be totally consumed in the chamber.

Gunfire is gunfire. Don’t do it, especially if intoxicated. Fer cryin’ out loud, guns aren’t toys.

@edwest2 Yup I agree that the practice is very reckless and would never do it.

Thanks for replying!

Yes, if it really is gunfire and not firecrackers, I’d phone it in. I know I’m responding late but If they’re shooting 45 minutes early, they’re inconsiderate, possibly drinking and that leads to recklessness. (Bullets have to land somewhere.)

Happy New Years, BTW. Be Safe!

I remember when I was driving a Maxi-Taxi part time (in Australia, not the US). I picked up one bloke in a wheelchair, and as part of the general conversation, asked him, “If you don’t mind my asking, how did you wind up in a wheelchair?”

He just gave me this dour look, and just said, “Alcohol and guns don’t mix.”

This happens all the time around here.

A large-caliber round can travel several miles, and easily has enough terminal velocity to pierce the human head or body. Every few years, one hears of someone struck dead at the head or shoulder by a bullet travelling in a vertical path.

If I knew the person doing this, I’d try to stop them. And if I didn’t know them well enough for that, I’d report it. Human life is worth it.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the (name removed by moderator)ut. I asked the question in the context of an ordinary citizen at home, not knowing anyone who plans to shot in the air.

And Happy New Year!

You’re welcome. I used to live in Detroit and started hearing fully automatic gunfire. I called the police who asked me to do a little recon for them. I told them I couldn’t take the chance to even be near a window.

Best,
Ed
