Scientology’s cruise ship the S.S. Freewinds has been impounded and sealed by Health Officials in Curacao. It is full of blue asbestos, the most carcinogenic kind of asbestos. Members of the youth protest movement, Anonymous, have started to refer to this as the Deathwinds Scandal.

The excellent Dawn Olsen at the celebrity gossip site Glosslip.com has been tirelessly exposing the human rights abuses of Scientology. This evening on her podcast she interviewed Kendra Wiseman of Ex-Scientology kids and her father Lawrence Woodcraft. Kendra spoke of the severe human rights abuses and destruction of family ties she experienced growing up in Scientology. She added coerced marriages to coerced divorces and coerced abortions to the list of Scientology’s abusive practices that destroy family life.

Her father shared his own experience as an architect who inspected the Freewinds in the eighties and reported the presence of blue asbestos to the executives of the Church including David Miscavige, head of the Church, and Tom Cruise’s closest friend. He pointed out that thousands of people, Scientologists and non-Scientologists alike, have now been exposed to lung cancer. David Miscavige has done nothing about the problem for years.

Dawn said that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are at risk for lung cancer by Scientology’s Freewinds, and that the celebrity gossip circuit will pick this up as the Celebrity Deathwinds Scandal unfolds.

Ironic, isn’t it that the secular celebrity gossip circuit is exposing the human rights abuses of the Church of Scientology while the Church has yet to say a word.

“Been exposed to lung cancer?”

or “Been potentially exposed to asbestos which is a know carcinogen?” 😉

Gossip is what Gossip does. 🤷

This is fear mongering and sensationalism. Asbestos is dangerous only when floating around in the air and inhaled. Asbestos insulation on pipes which is coated with several layers of mastic doesn’t hurt a thing if left undisturbed. I agree with an earlier poster. Gossip and nothing else. It also has absolutely nothing to do with social justice.

True, asbestos isn’t dangerous when properly contained. However, in this case, it has not been. according to an affidavit by Lawrence Woodcraft, Scientology has flat-out ignored the situation on the Freewinds since 1987, when he served as the architect in charge of the ship’s refit. In addition, the asbestos present on the Freewinds isn’t the same as what is normally found in buildings as fire protection or as part of tiles - blue asbestos is known to be far more hazardous, and can cause problems which might not appear for 40 or more years later (Cancer incidence among women and girls environmentally and occupationally exposed to blue asbestos at Wittenoom, Western Australia - Int J Cancer. 2008 May 15;122(10):2337-44.)

I appreciate everyone’s responses. The most important issue raised is whether the human rights abuses of the Church of Scientology are are concerns for Catholic social justice.

My long response to this important issue is below. Here is a summary: The Church of Scientology’s continuing human rights abuses are inimical to the Gospels and the social justice teaching of the Catholic Church. It has bullied into silence two of the major institutions of our society: the government and the media. It continues to suppress freedom of speech on the internet. It is compelled by the immutable teaching of its founder, L. Ron Hubbard, to fair game (utterly destroy) all who oppose it and whom it terms SP’s (Suppressive Persons). The Anonymous youth protest movement is rapidly increasing awareness and relentlessly exposing abuses long hidden from public view. 25% of Anonymous are Catholics between the ages of 18 and 25. They expect the Church to speak and act for truth and justice.

Full response:

The central concerns of Catholic social justice teachings of the are the sanctity of human life from conception to death; dignity of the human person; the right to the necessities of life including health care and decent working conditions. The testimony of those who were and continue to be victims of these abuses is abundant: forced marriages of teenagers; forced divorces; forced abortions; indoctrination in place of education; medical neglect, particularly of the elderly; separation of children and parents; holding people against their will; violation of the rights of workers, and routine neglect of worker safety.

Because of the Church’s compulsory doctrine of Fair Game, essential institutions of our society continue to be threatened by the Church, namely the government and the media.

Anyone who opposes the Church is deemed a Suppressive Person (SP). Thus, the government, the justice system, law enforcement officials, and the IRS are all considered suppressive organizations. In addition, because of the Church’s strange attribution of all evils in society to psychiatry, all mental health professionals, and manufacturers of psychiatric medications are all SP’s and are to be destroyed.

In accordance with the Fair Game imperative, SP’s may be “tricked, lied to, cheated, sued, or destroyed.” Our federal and state governments were infiltrated and documents stolen and destroyed in Operation Snow White, the largest infiltration of our government ever, in which the Church fielded over 4,000 covert agents. The Church declared a war on the IRS to obtain tax-exemption as a church. At a victory celebration head of the Church and close friend of Tom Cruise, David Miscavige, boasted that the Church had depleted the IRS’s budget allotment for dealing with the Church’s massive litigation offensive.

Time magazine wrote a cover story “Scientology - Cult of Greed and Power.” The Church savagely fair gamed the reporter who wrote the story. It has successfully “shuddered into silence”, in the words of L. Ron Hubbard, almost the entire media. Prominent Critic of Scientology Mark Bunker recently reported his conversation with a reporter from CNN who said that CNN had prepared three stories on Scientology which CNN executives killed out of fear of being fair gamed by the Church. It bullys YouTube to suppress free speech on the internet.

Our churches, as well, are victims of a manifest injustice perpetrated by the Church of Scientology.

The Church of Scientology is basically a business operation. It generates profits by selling, by whatever coercive means necessary, books, education classes, a strange form of do-it-yourself psychotherapy, and the most expensive program for exorcism of evil spirits ever invented. Because of its tax-exemption as a church all “fixed donations” with which parishioners (members) purchase religious education, books, classes, and services from Church of Scientology ministers, are tax-exempt. Catholics and all parents who send their children to religious schools of many faiths are denied this exemption.

A concern for our Church is how our bishops will go about investigating these issues, and how and when they will begin to speak about them. Anonymous is rapidly increasing public awareness of Scientology’s abuses. Our bishops move with prudential slowness in response to rising social issues. They will look to us laity, clergy, and religious to discern the movements of the Spirit of Truth.

With every new attempt to fair game Anonymous, the anons, as they call themselves, grow more inventive and determined. Their courage and passionate commitment to justice have given the bullied and the terrorized the freedom to speak up without fear of reprisal. They know that more than 10,000 young people in 74 cities around the world have their backs. Anonymous is relentless and unstoppable.

25% of Anonymous are Catholic. The number of Catholic anons is going to increase as they network and organize with other Catholic and Christian anons. They will be joined by older generations.

The tide of awareness will soon reach all the churches. They will all be required to decide whether they have the courage to risk being fair gamed by the Church of Scientology or remain silent about an organization whose practices are profoundly inimical to the Gospels. This young adult generation of Catholics and other Christians is asking the rest of us to have the courage to speak out. They expect us to act with them for truth and justice.

you’ll be taken more seriously when you drop the “celebrity deathwinds” tabloid nonsense.

Your are absolutely correct. The subject it was meant to be an imitation of a celebrity gossip rag headline. The other thing is someone told me posts here get included in google news. So I wanted a provocative headline to let CoS know that their abuses are now or soon will be exposed in the tabloid.press. Once it gets there it will spread the knowledge among many people about the abuses of the Church of Scientology.

I apologize to any readers who were offended, from now on out I will take a more measured approach.

I request your prayers for those in fear, for those undergoing abuse, and for the families destroyed by Scientology.

Your references are fuzzy, since you refer to this cult and the Catholic Church as “the Church.” But if I’m correct, you mean to refer to the Catholic Church by saying 'the Church has yet to say a word."

In which case…what, you expect the Pope to comment every time a Hari Krishna sneezes?? The Church need not be expected to comment on every new cult that comes along, any more than She should be expected to comment on every new murder case or well-known sex scandal. The CHURCH’s position on such issues–cults like Scientology included–is well known and needs no elaboration.

I doubt these people are the Men in Black. Perhaps they have rallies where they talk about taking over the world. So have a whole lot of other groups, for hundreds of years, I suppose. And yet, the world remains untaken.

I agree we should pray for these people. I know next to nothing about them, and since I live nowhere near the vicinity of hollywood, I doubt I shall ever have need to.

I believe that they were referring to the “Church” of Scientology in both cases.

As for the CoS not being the “Men in Black”, every time I think that the stories about them are insane, someone who has left them steps up to confirm that it is, in fact, true. As an example, please take a look at this thread.

Please, please, please, educate yourself about this cult and its associated front organizations. They aren’t just in Hollywood. They work to indoctrinate unsuspecting children under the guise of “Applied Scholastics International”, they work to indoctrinate those trying to beat drug addiction under the guise of “Narconon”, they work to indoctrinate those trying to leave other cults under the guise of the “Cult Awareness Network”.

On a lighter note, this is an article from a 1955 Scientology publication, exhorting members to try and get selected celebrities to convert. Take a look at the 4th name down in the center column of the list. :rotfl:
