Why are nuns and catholic priests called to do this?
I think they promise to live a simple life, avoid extravagance. .Secular clergy do not make a vow of poverty as far as I know. All consecrated in the religious orders do.
Just a general why.If you want to get technical, only religious priest (and all other religious) make vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience (secular/diocesan priests only make promises). They’re also called the evangelical counsels.
All of those are gifts from God. The ability to participate in creation (by having children, so sexuality), the ability to have stuff, and independence are all gifts. Religious are called to give these gifts back to God, and to dedicate their whole life to God for the rest of their lives.
Do you have anything specific you were wondering, or just a general why?
