I’m an amazed at the number of people that cannot live without these things even a hour a week. I was at Tridentine Indult Mass last night
and this guy cell phone went off. What was worse is it was one of those particular cel phones that plays a song for a “ring” which was quite annoying and the guy couldn’t get turned off so he had get up and leave.

Please read my above post from yesterday. Fortunately, my fellow choir member did not have a heart attack, but thanks to the fact that I had a working cell phone in my purse (with the ringer turned off) we were able to get the ambulance there in minutes. If he had been having a heart attack the time saved could have saved his life- we didn’t have to unlock an office to get to a phone or get one from someone in the congregation.

Unfortunately some people are either forgetful, lazy, or rude and don’t put their phones in “manner” mode, which makes all of us who carry phones look bad.

In our Church they announce to please turn off all cell phones before the start of the Mass. It seems to work pretty well, I only remember one going off for one ring in the last year…

The Cell phone jjamers arent illigal. Remember seperation of church and state? WHy should the government tell us how to run our church? Do we pass laws telling the government how to steal money from the people and mislead them? I dont think so.

Check out this news story. There is a device available from the Israeli military that can block cell reception in a given area. They are using it in a parish in Mexico to block those annoying cell phone rings during Mass! Not a bad idea…👍

It is however according to FCC rules it is illegal to do that in the U.S.
I do tend to agree however that cell phones should be set to buzz for those who must have them like those on transplant lists, Dr’s, etc.

The jamming equipment wouldn’t be illegal if it was limited to a church – much like a unlicensed radio station that can only be heard on private property – like at a drive-in.

Even if it were illegal, as long as it was limited to the church, the FCC wouldn’t dare make a stink.
Yes it is because unlike a Low Power broadcast which sends useful information for reception and use. These devices INTENTIONALLY interfere in RF transmissions of others. I would suggest that for those interested there are Low Power PA transmitters that broadcast the Mass audio for the hearing impared that transmit near cell frequencies 800-900, 1200-1300 and 2400 Mhz causing “unwanted” local interference.

As someone who needs his cellphone/pager at times what is everyone who is against cellphone/pagers at Mass suggesting those of us who need them do?

I set mine to silent mode, which means that when they go off they vibrate.

Now if there was a device in the Church that would not let my cellphone/pager go off then I would have to miss Mass on those Sundays that fall in my on-call rotation.

That would be unacceptable and anyways those devices are illeagel in the USA.

I am a home health aide who carries a phone. during mass, I turn the ringer off – but people need to be able to get ahold of me at a moment’s notice.

Don’t burn all of us for the sins of a few 😃

If You have a Samsung phone hold down the # button and it will go into silent mode. If you havea call it will buzz.

Apparently you’ve never known nor been someone who was on call 24 hours on an emergency basis.

FYI, I have family who have/are police/fire workers. As early as I can remember (and I have vivid memories starting at age 2), I remember having one-way pagers that allowed them to hear the police/fire calls when an emergency signal went out. Yes, they were bulky and not two-way communication, however, don’t act like radio communications is some “new-fangled” device.

What if the EMT that needed to save YOUR life was in a building that had jammers when the call went out?..

Also, FYI – modern cell phones DO NOT interfere with medical equipment. That’s a myth propogated by fear of 80’s high-power 3-watt cell phones. I know and have dated a nurse (and known other medical personnel) who carry/use their cell phones in the hospital for their entire shift. How do you think they contact DOCTORS who are located throughout various medical facilities? It’s a rhetorical question. The primary method is cell phones. Ditto goes for planes… modern cell phones do not interfere with planes. I personally would be afraid to ride in a device that has such weak, poorly shielded electronics that a .125-.500 watt device on a completely different frequency range could “interfere” with it in any shape, form or fashion.

These jammers should remain illegal.

No kidding. How did those who are “on call 24/7” ever buy groceries or gasoline prior to cell phones? Most certainly did not have the ultra expensive radio phones of years past…

All a matter of priorities…
