Do you bring your cell phone into church ?

A year or so ago - at mass - as the Priest -
lifted up the Eucharist - and was about to say -
“ this is the body of Christ “ …
Yup. A cell phone started ringing.
One of those goofy theme song jingles.
The Priest was livid…yet waited.
The phone rang loudly three times…
Never saw a mass, stopped in time, like that, before.

Also, the Pastor, snuck up into the balcony,
during a Sunday mass…as another Priest served.
He saw people, on their cell phone, during the homily.
I have always left mine in the car.

Any church / cell phone stories ?

I saw one lady, in the news,
who took a photo - during adoration -
And captured - what look like Mary - kneeling -

I leave mine in the car. I am just not that important that people can’t wait an hour to reach me. 😉

It’s with me on Sunday, but at home for Daily Mass. I don’t even trust it on silent when at Mass, I need it turned off for peace of mind 😂

Phones go off occasionally, but I’ll never forget the guy who had the nerve to answer it. The gifts had been brought up and the priest was just opening his mouth to speak when this phone rings and the guy answers and proceeds to have a conversation right there not five pews away from the front. Our priest stopped everything and just stared at the guy in shock. And when that didn’t get the message across, he very calmly said “If that call is so important that you can’t wait until the end of Mass, then you’d better leave.” Then when the guy didn’t get up at once (seriously, how could someone be that oblivious??) Father said curtly “That wasn’t a suggestion.” Then the guy did leave - finally!

They make an announcement before mass to remind people to turn off or silence their phones, and I am always surprised by how many people are reaching into their purse, or pockets because they hadn’t done it already. I guess they just can’t be so unconnected from the outside world! They wait until the very last moment.

I think before every Mass an announcement should be made about cell phones in the off position.
I leave mine in the car too.
One Good Friday service the woman seated in front of me fumbled trying to turn her phone off after it rang the FIRST time.
She failed, the phone rang a SECOND time! Again she clumsily tried to shut the phone off. She failed again. The phone rang a THIRD time!! The Good Friday service is very solemn so this was quite an interruption. Her daughter finally grabbed the phone from her and successfully turned it off.
I was extremely annoyed.

I usually don’t remember to take mine out of my purse. I was always taught, never leave your cell phone in the car, or if you do make sure it’s in the glove box or something. Otherwise it’s a temptation for thieves to break in so they can resell your phone. It’s just habit to keep it right with me any time I’m not home so it doesn’t end up stolen.

Usually not turning it off is less a waiting til last minute thing and more that I just forgot. It’s like my wallet - it just stays in my purse automatically, I don’t really think about it all that much until it goes off or someone says something about it.

I really just have my cell. phone for emergencies. I hardly ever use it.

We have home phone service, so I direct people to call us there.

My cell. phone is always off, so it wouldn’t be turned on in church.

No one would want to steal my phone, hahaha! Not a flip phone, but not smart either.

I don’t think I even have a phone jack here. Cell phone’s the only way to reach me. That seems to be pretty common nowadays if you’re renting cheap apartments.

Yeah, I mean, mine’s pretty much on the low end of smart phone, but I’m not sure thieves can really tell from the outside. It’s kind of like my purse - there really isn’t much of anything worth stealing in there, but a thief’s not going to know that until after my window’s broken.

Until I get my bike fixed I’ve been carrying my cell phone with me so that I can check the time to see if I need to run in order to arrive on time. But at Church I’ve been leaving it with my jacket so it’s not in the nave. But once the weather warms up it’ll be in my pocket on silence or turned off.

A few weeks ago, Father was preaching the homily which was on the calling of the apostles and how we should answer God’s call… “Are we really listening? Do we hear him calling us?” Just then, a cell phone rang loud and clear. Without missing a beat, Father said, “See? He’s calling!” We got a chuckle out of it, all except the lady who was fumbling wildly in her purse (seriously, WHY does anyone without small childen need what amounts to a backpack in Mass?) to find her phone!

I always have my cell phone with me, but rarely ever have the sound turned on. At mass I use my phone to follow the readings.

Phones do occasionally go off during mass, but I’m not really bothered by it. People forget to turn them off, or think they are turned off, or think they are in the car, etc. It happens.

Maybe we could all just relax a bit and try not to get so worked up about things we can’t control. We should especially try to weed out whatever it is inside our hearts that makes us pass judgment on others for not being as holy and responsible as ourselves.

Well, the fact is, they never had these type of interruptions in thousands of years. The world has found its way into the church, via this small device. Has caused distraction. Killed untold amounts of people while driving. People walk about in society with cell phones always near their faces like a zombie apocalypse tribe - lol .

Glad Priests don’t have them - when their standing at the altar - and have to stop the mass, for a moment, to see if it’s important.

I am a head server at my parish, and our priest always has his in his pocket during Mass, but usually remembers to turn it off…it’s never gone off, but… In liturgy, murphy’s law reigns supreme.

We have an app for the parishioners that disables their ringer when they are on our property…at our IP address. When they leave the parking lots everything returns.
Simple solution

I keep my cell phone with the camera on partially but discretely hidden behind the hymnal I don’t use, so I can record any liturgical abuse, immodest clothing and irreverent music I encounter at Mass. Once I gather enough evidence, I will start a much needed thread on CAF about these issues.

I’m only kidding 😜! I keep my cell phone in my pocket and silenced at Mass.

I should also point out the pictures I have of my confirmation and first communion were taken on a cell phone.

My phone is on me at all times. We are always asked right before Mass begins to silence our phones and set them to vibrate so as not to disturb anyone else. My phone is turned off the moment I get to Church.

Our parish is a rural parish, with multiple worship sites, so Mass attendance at any one Mass is less than 150…cell phones are noticeable…the priests mention them occasionally, but there’s still the occasional embarrassing ring…the most embarrassing by far was when Father Ned’s phone rang during his homily, and he had to fumble through his vestments to turn it off…

He must not have been a dr then. We have several drs in our parish. And sometimes, you can hear their cell phones vibrate. When that happens, they quietly get up and leave in order to take the call.
