Cell phones in worship

In the days when people still looked at their wrists instead of their phones to tell time…

…I can remember that it used to be very common at Mass to hear all kinds of watch alarms going off on the hour if it was a Mass that began on the half hour or went longer than an hour. But now I can’t remember the last time I heard a watch chiming in. I don’t know if those kinds of watches just aren’t as popular anymore or if people have finally figured out how to turn off the hourly beep.

At least most people don’t set their cell phone alarms to go off each hour.

It is not legal in the United States, but in some countries churches are being rigged with some sort of jamming system that prevents telephone and pager signals to be received or sent from inside the building.
Maybe it is just me, but I think is is discourteous for cell phhone users to chat away while shopping. I still make a list when I go to the supermarket, making a call home unnecessary to find out what shouldbe purchased.

I’m glad that is illegal here, because those of us who are on call for hospital duty may have no other option but to take their cell phones to Mass turned on or miss Mass. I almost never use my cell phone, but the main reason I have one is so I can take call and go places instead of sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring.

Big legal issue as someone is trying to call 911 from the cry room or something like that.

I almost never use my cell phone, but the main reason I have one is so I can take call and go places instead of sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring.

I have a friend who helps with the music. He is a cardiologist and when he is on call he must take his phone with him. I have occasionally needed to keep my phone on silent when I have had an impending responsibility. It does happen. In the past a person might have to stay home and miss Mass to be near a phone.

As nothing in my life requires instant connection with me, I leave mine in the car when I go into church! Then I don’t have to mess with any of the settings . . .
