So, I currently can not afford to pay for internet service at my home, however I have a cellphone and I pay for my unlimited data plan. What I did to my phone is that I bypassed a lock on it to allow it to use my unlimited data plan as a hotspot for my computer so that I can use the internet. Yes, you have to pay for this feature on the phone but I found a way to unlock it. I am not affecting anyone else in any way but at this point it’s convenient for me to use the internet to work on my job while I am at home. Now I have been having terrible scruples over this. Is it a mortal sin? As in, am I going to burn in hell for all eternity because of this action if left unconfessed. Is this mortal or venial? I know that for something to be of mortal sin it has to be of a grave matter.

Thank you.

So stop doing it and go to Confession. Problem solved right?

My thought is it becomes a mortal sin if continued over an extended time.

my question is it mortal or venial
Look at it this way. Let’s say the value of the feature you are bipassing is $40 a month. Now let’s say you go into Walmart every month and shoplift $40 worth of merchandise. Would it be a mortal sin to do this?

This theft by deception and you already know this. You’re looking for an excuse to quantify/justify your actions. Can’t be done. Don’t look here for a need to steal services that everyone else pays for. That reminds: Don’t ever ask to borrow my phone. If i cannot trust you with ‘small’ thefts I will never trust ever trust you with my phone or anything else…never.

Having worked the mobile phone world for 20 years, it’s quite likely they are picking up on it. Most if not all carriers limit hotspot connections to something like 10Gig. I don’t know what sort of hack you did and I’m not 100% sure how hotspot calls are setup normally; I’m more familiar with voice and data on regular smartphone connections. However having some general networking background, I can see a few possibilities of detecting multiple device connections depending how it’s setup. You might want to stop before they figure things out.
