I go to daily Mass, but lately the cellphones have been getting worse and worse. Every day at least 4-5 go off. Today somebody answered their phone and was having a conversation during the readings. The priest did stop Mass one day when the same phone went off for the third time and it just kept going, but usually he doesn’t say anything. It’s totally disrespectful and I’m thinking about not going any more because it makes me mad, which is not why I’m going to Mass in the first place.

I know a priest who practically did an entire homily on turning your cell phone to airplane mode while at mass 🙂

Father said silent isn’t good enough because will still vibrate us an distract us. He reminded us that few are so important that we cannot disconnect for Mass (disconnect by turning the cell either completely off or to airplane mode)

This is very unusual. I have only heard a cellphone go off a few times a year…Not every mass. Is it the same person?

The policy at our Church is to request that parishioners turn their phones off before the start of Mass. Most everyone complies. Occasionally a few late arrivers do not net the message.

The OP was talking about daily Mass. Skipping it wouldn’t endanger his soul

I have to bring this to church ⛪🤓

Definitely speak to the priest to see if he’ll issue reminders. I can’t remember ever hearing a phone go off during Mass…though it has happened during Adoration.

That’s a bit much,

Any kind of meeting, not just Mass, its just ignorant to leave your phone on or even worse answering it. Same if you are going into a museum or library, turn it to “vibrate”. People just don’t want to hear phones going off.

i agree; this is an issue

the music minister instructs the parishioners to silence their phones right before mass starts

but somehow these ignoramuses can’t figure out how to to do this

i’ve heard jingle bells, old-style telephone ringing bells, classical music (beethoven) all during mass; sometimes during the consecration

usually the recepient of the call is too ashamed to answer; so their phone rings & rings

SILENCE THE DARN THING

Some of us cannot use airplane mode. Some of us are required to be a call away regardless of where we are. I would say that also applies to on call police officers, detectives, doctors, PAs, firemen…

I have to have my phone on vibrate. And if it goes off I have to check it. No one has noticed it yet. My commander is a good guy, but if I’m recalled and don’t answer, he likely wouldn’t be.

having the phone on vibrate is no big deal

you can lift the phone out of your pocket & decide in an instant whether it it is important enough to respond to immediately

the bells, whistles, music, etc… can and should be silenced during Mass

100%. I check mine multiple times before Mass starts just to be sure I really did silence it.

Because I’d die if the thing went off. 😖😖😖😖

I use the Universalis app to follow along during weekday Masses, and I always feel out of place.

My phone is on silent, and I am really reading the readings and responses but dear heavens, the glares I have received. 😐

So, this week I kinda stopped and now I can’t really follow along. 😓

Name calling? Seriously?

One time it was my priest’s cell phone going off. It happens. It is really embarrassing when you’re the one.

There has got to be an app for this. Surely someone has made one where you program it with a location (by standing at the location and pressing a button) and it shuts off the phone when you are at that spot in the future?

no; i didn’t mean to disparage

but it is so so easy to place your phone , when it rings, in a mode where no-one else can hear hear it

Make a paper sign that says “Please turn your cell phone to silent”. Tape it to the church door

Right… that’s why he said “few of us.” 😉
