I love the haunting music that comes from that genre as well as other stuff.
Well then, you have to check out Loreena McKennitt!

You can see the CDs, songs, etc on her website.

I particularly like The Visit Amazon] and The Book of Secrets Amazon] (if I had to choose.) My mother-in-law who hates all things remotely interesting was even spellbound by Loreena’s voice–she downloaded every single one of her CDs!

Other than that, The Chieftains, The Corrs, The Pogues, and The Dubliners, Gwendal, Van Morrison, Irish Rovers, and Irish Descendents are in my shuffle list. I also have a song by Karen Matheson called Irish Wedding Song that is great. And Clannad. And Carrantuohill. The Celtic Ceili Band. And my daughter’s favorite song in the world is called Scottish Anthem–Techno Rave Bagpipes. Not haunting in the least, but fun. And another fun one is Ricky Skaggs and The Chieftains doing the Cotton-Eyed Joe.

Celtic music from Spain was mentioned a couple of times in this thread. I have not heard of it. Im wondering if anyone can suggest a few artists who perform this kind of music so I can listen to it.

Two other Celtic artists that I have liked are Kate Price and Darby DeVon.

Luz: The Chieftains put out an album entitled “Santiago” which traces the evolution of Galician Celtic Music. The other big Galician musician is Carlos Nunez (sorry my keyboard does not have a tilde but you know where it should go). The Chieftains came to New Orleans many years ago. Carlos Nunez was a guest artist with them. He plays the Galician bagpipes. In addition Michael Flatley (this was before Riverdance) was with them. Good stuff! Obviously Celtic yet, at the same time, Spanish.

Do not try Clannad–it’s filled with all that new age garbage, like Enya.

Instead try Maire (aka Moya) Brennan, the lead singer of Clannad and sister of Enya. Her stuff is Christian.
:hmmm: I didn’t really realize that…I still like Enya’s music though.

I like the music of Daniel O’Donnell…especially his “Our Lady of Knock”…

Me too, but now it bothers me that she is new age. I can barely hear any message in it, so it must be going over my head. I did visit her dad’s pub 4 years ago in Ireland where he lines the walls with Gold and Platinum records of all his children. I heard him play the accordian too. I don’t know if he is still alive, but I thought he was great.

Awesome !!! Thanks for the information. I cant wait to hear what this sounds like. I love Celtic music and I love Spanish music. So Im sure I will love what I hear. 👍

Yes, definately like Maire Brennan (I can’t get used to her new spelling of her name - but then her sister Enya’s name is actually originally spelled Ethne or something similar - can’t blame them for wanting to be sure that folks can pronounce it right!)

I have heard that Enya also objects to the “new age” title - don’t have any of her music, so I can’t say much about that - but if they both reject the “new age” title, I’d wonder whether Clannad (their family group) was that new age either, but I’m just speculating based on almost nothing… (but I don’t see Maire singing with Clannad if they were actively New Age, even if they were her family)

I do find it extremely odd that Maire was up for a grammy for “new age” music for a CHRISTIAN album on WORD records, lol

hey the Lord of the Rings sountracks hav pimp stuff lyk Enya and tha song Pippin sings to Denethor in The Return of the King. check it out!

Jah people ride on!

Whatever the message is, it’s going over my head too.
That visit to Ireland must have been really nice,🙂

See my message above - I’ve read that Enya rejects the “new age” typing of her music… and I doubt that Maire would have stayed with Clannad for so long (despite it being family) if it were truely new age either, considering her Christian beliefs… So I’m likely to give them the benefit of the doubt to some extent (though I’m happy to just stick to Maire!)

For good singalong music, Women of the World: Celtic (one and two) are fun!! They are produced by Putumayo. We also have an African and Islands cd, the kids love them. Putumayo has tons of cds of music from all over the world. Great exposure for the kids to different musical styles.

Gaelic Storm is beautiful music,
Young Dubliners
Great Big Sea
, even though they are out of St. John’s Bay, there is a huge Gaelic influnce among the fishers and GBS Irish ballads are great.
7 Nations, a lot of fun!!!

We saw Great Big Sea along with 7 Nations in a small venue concert the one time they were in San Diego a few years ago. FUN FUN FUN!!!

The sound track to Riverdance is always a fav in our family.

The sound track to the Secret of Roan Inish is absolutely beautiful!!! All of the sung songs are in Gaelic. There is a Gaelic lullaby I sing to my kids. They love it and it has been part of our night time routine for years and years.

I love the sound of Celtic music, too. When I went to the Irish festival here is South Florida a couple months ago, I saw a group called Off Kilter. They are awesome. They are an alternative Irish rock band, and they play traditional songs to a lively beat. I bought one of their CD’s, Celtic Armadillo, and absolutely love it. They do an amazing job with Amazing Grace. You wouldn’t believe how easy it is to dance to the way they play it. Their website is here, and if you want to sample some of their music, you can find it here.
I am not affiliated with the band; I just really like their sound.

I am interested in purchasing some celtic/Irish music cd’s but need suggestions. I love the haunting music that comes from that genre as well as other stuff.
You may like Francis Black & her sister Mary Black, i’ll get back to you with others.
Check the gallery out here if you like, celticfusion.co.uk/

mary-black.net/

Some of Mary’s recordings here, "No Frontiers is an album that springs to mind. blixstreet.com/maryblack.html

Celtic radio stations online, Celi house RTE 1 has been on air for as long as I remember, ramsisle.com/celtic/webradio.htm#ContinuousMusic

You could also check out Sharon Shannon, google it 🙂 also a popular band at one time, “Horslips” although no-longer playing together, they were Celtic Rock and some aren’t keen on it. horslips.com/

I’ll mention a performer who is kind of off the beaten path. It is not Cletic, but it appears to have an interesting Celtic influence and a haunting quality. The performer’s name is Aselin Debison, and she is a young lady from Cape Breton, Canada. I don’t recommend her newest work particularily, as it seems to have lost some of what made it unique, but I do recommend Sweet is the Melody. I also suggest the DVD format, it includes a lovely song called “The Gift” about an orphan named Maria.

The Corrs have just released a new album called ‘Home’ with loads of traditional Irish songs. Worth checking out.
