I am a revert to the Catholic Church, my husband and I having come back after 38 years. So there are a few things (to say the least) that are new to us from what we remember so many years ago. One of them is the practice of centering prayer. I have read pros and cons regarding this matter, and I myself tend to think it is very new age and something to be avoided, as Pope Benedict XVI seems to have said also. However, I know many churches have a formal practice of this.
Recently in our local Diocese paper, there was an article by a respected priest who said he has been doing it every day for 20 years. I wrote in to the paper and said I had heard that it was not a good thing. This week someone answered my letter and said that “Centering prayer is alive and well in our diocese”, that being Brooklyn, New York, and more specifically, Long Island for the writer. The writer said that Pope John Paul II had a great love for contemplative prayer, but it is my understanding that centering prayer and contemplative prayer are two separate actions.
Anyway, sorry for the long post, but I would love to hear people’s experiences with centering prayer and their thoughts, because I’m really confused on this one! Thanks
