Three cheers for the pagan Confucius and his Middle Way!
“Everything in moderation.”
Actually certain things in moderation are pretty destructive. I wager that killing people in moderation is a pretty bad idea.
Indecent exposure in moderation might still get you arrested.
Try this one on your wife: “Hey sweetheart, I’m going to go to the strip club, but it’s okay because I’m only going once every few weeks, you know, in moderation.” For some reason I don’t think that would go over too well.
“Just harmless things in moderation.”
Well if it’s harmless, why do it in moderation? If you have to put a restriction on how often you do it, it’s obviously harmful. How about this: If it’s bad, don’t do it. If it’s good, do it, and do it a lot.
You can sit there and say, “Not everything is moral or immoral, some things are amoral.” And while that’s true, what is also true is that each thing will either bring you closer to God or not bring you closer to God. If something doesn’t bring you closer to God at the end of the day, why would you spend time doing it? What is your goal in life? To be successful? To make money? To have friends? To be well liked by others? Why? When your time runs out, what will all of that do for you? Should not our primary concern be for our salvation, and the salvation of our brethren? What good is it, to be saved in this life, if you will be lost after it?
There is no room for compromise when it comes to good and evil.
