Chaldean/ACoE sanctuary veil

Sorry guys, but here’s another academic question for our Chaldean/ACoE brethern.

This one, as the title says, has to do with use of the sanctuary veil. In the Chaldean restoration, I’ve noticed that the veil is closed at the beginning and then opened at the Lakhu Mara which, IIRC, is the same as in the ACoE. What I’ve not seen is the veil being drawn again. My problem is that I don’t recall the ACoE practice. Does the veil remain open for the duration, or is it closed again and reopened at a certain point(s)? Should it be?

I’ve only seen the veil open once throughout the entirety of the reformed Chaldean liturgy at St. Peter’s cathedral. In the beginning, the veil is initially closed, then it is opened at the Lakhu Mara, and then closed again at the end of the liturgy. Traditionally, there is a couple other closings and openings that occur during the liturgy, and my sister has told me that Bishop Sarhad has spoken about this, but I haven’t seen it yet.

The Assyrian practice shows a couple more closings and openings:

  • The showing of the initial closed veil and initial opening is cut-off from the video.
  • The second closing occurs at 29:19.
  • The second opening occurs at 38:41.
  • The third closing is not shown.
  • The third opening occurs at 1:07:09.
  • The final closing is cut-off from the video.

  • The veil is initially closed, and is initially opened at 00:01 (at the very beginning, the Shem Awa, rather than the Lakhu Mara).
  • The second closing occurs at 56:15.
  • The second opening occurs at 1:04:42.
  • The third closing occurs at 1:38:32.
  • The third opening occurs at 1:41:30.
  • The final closing is cut-off from the video.

It makes sense that the veil should be opened and closed at certain times.

Question: did I miss something or in the vids is it closed at the Fraction? I know there are certain differences between the Chaldean reform and the ACoE practice, and I’m really not all that familiar with the latter.

Yes, the veil is closed at the Fraction, during the second closing. 🙂

In the Syro Malabar Church, the veil is opened during “Lakhu Mara” or the Malayalam equivalent “Sarva-Dipanam Karthave” is sung and it remains open the rest of the Holy Qurbana. I know that in the West Syriac Tradition it is closed and reopened a couple times.

Do you have any knowledge in regards the practice of the ACE in India (Chaldean Syrian Church)?

Don’t quote me on this but I believe they follow the same tradition as the Syro Malabar Church when it comes to the Sanctuary Veil, as in opening it once.
