Hey Ya’ll,

I was wondering about what the fast cycle is like within the Chaldean and Malabar traditions? How are they compared with the Assyrian Church of the East’s fast and how do they differ from the Oriental and Byzantine fasts in praxis?

Thanks!

From personal knowledge, the fasting cycle within the Chaldean church is identical to the ACoE. Lent is calculated the same way as most Eastern churches do, starting on a Monday instead of Ash Wednesday. Baoutha or the Supplication of the Ninevites is a three day fasting period unique to our tradition, starting this Monday. Fasting occurs the day before major feasts such as the Assumption or Christmas as well. I wish I knew if there were more fasting periods.

God Bless.

The Syriac Orthodox, Syro-Malankara Catholics, and Malankara Orthodox have the Nineveh fast as well – and I think the Copts adopted it from the Syriac Churches sometime early centuries!
