My heart and prayers goes out to all the Chaldean Catholics of Iraq, and to all Christians in the Middle East who are living in fear because of their faith in Jesus Christ. It is unimaginable that anyone would have to pay with their lives for their faith in Jesus Christ. How bravely these people have kept their faith over the centuries! What an inspiration they are to Christians all over the world! It puts the rest of us, who have never known any real persecution to shame. How much the authentic ancient community of Christians in Kerala owe to Chaldean Christians for giving them their Syriac Liturgy and giving them a bishop for that many centuries!
How sad it is when even in this day and age, freedom of religion as a concept is so foreign to some people!
In this season of Advent, I send all Chaldean Catholics special love and prayers, with a grateful heart for all that they (and the Assyro-Chaldean community) did for an ancient community in Kerala until the death in 1597 of Mar Abraham, the Chaldean bishop sent to Malabar Coast. May the mighty hand of God, our Heavenly Father, protect them; may the light of Jesus Christ shine in the darkness of their political situation, and may the strength of the Holy Spirit set them free from all fear! May they live like brothers and sisters among Muslims in their country, as many claim they had done, until the war started in 2003.
