Not only that he kissed Cardinal Bertone’s ring?! The Secretary of State for the Holy See, why?!

A patriarch kissing the Pope’s ring is not bad.

The pope is patriarch of Patriarchs, bishop of bishops, servant of servants!

I don’t think that His Beatitude kissed the Cardinal’s ring though, i think he only bowed down.

No. He is the first among equals and ecumenical patriarch in the Catholic church. Or at least we thought that when we became in communion with Rome.

This sounds encouraging, hopefully the delatinizing reforms will finally hit Michigan.
As Patriarch what directives will you be giving to the Iraqi Church: what reforms are urgently needed?
First of all, the liturgy, which is a state of chaos in the Chaldean Church. Take, for example, the Mass, each diocese has its own missal, every priest celebrates in a different way. Having a common and reformed liturgy single to the entire Church … this is a project that I really care about. This is not to say that there will be no freedom for the individual dioceses, but one point can not be ignored: there must be the same mass in Baghdad, Kirkuk, Kurdistan and also throughout the Chaldean Diaspora in the world. Even if it is translated into the national or local language, that is not a problem, as long as the liturgical norms to be respected remain, even this can become an element of unity.
In the words of St. John Chrysostom, “the liturgy is for the man” and the man should not remain subject to the liturgy. There is a movement among us who want the liturgy is rigid, as if it were the “Word of God”, but it is not so! So, reform or, better said, the updating of it is absolutely necessary for people to understand what happens during the celebration, which remains a celebration, and the faithful must be able to understand it fully.

Is not the expression “patriarch of patriarchs” found in an ancient Assyrian canon in regards to the Bishop of Rome? After all, it simply means “father of fathers” and certainly it was not unknown before the Great Schism for the Bishop of Rome to be addressed as the “father” of all the bishops and “head of all the Churches”. That being said, i too, even as a Latin, would be more comfortable with a patriarch simply exchanging the kiss of peace. The Pope of Rome ranks first and exercises a unique primacy, but the Patriarchs of the East are certainly his peers.

In regards to Cardinal Bertone, it only feeds the most unfortunate idea (still popular in many circles - particularly among “traditionalist” Latins) that the patriarchs are inferior to Cardinals. How any heads of Churches Sui Iuris can be inferior to cardinals is beyond me. It may be that many cardinals preside over archdioceses with millions of faithful - but it is not a numbers game.

Yes the Hudoyo Canon, binding on Syriac, Assyrian, Maronite, Syro-Malabar and Syro-Malankara clearly refers to the Pope of Rome as Reesh (Head/Prince) Patriarch, in relation to the others, but how this plays out or what this means is anyone’s guess. It also refers to the individual Patriarchs as Reesh in their church on relation to the other bishops.
