When we receive Communion, at my parish, a number of extraordinary ministers are usually in the Sanctuary administering the Chalice. Is this allowed? I feel awkward entering the sanctuary without first genuflecting or making some sort of gesture or reverence, then bowing before receiving, and then leaving the sanctuary. Is that one gesture before receiving communion enough? Or should I be making some sort of gesture for reverence thrice, since I’m entering and then leaving the sanctuary?

I don’t know why people are needing to enter the sanctuary area? Is it because of the layout of the Church? I attended a small church where you had to enter the sanctuary on the right side walk between the altar and the old altar attached to the wall receive the bloos of Christ on the left side of the sanctuary and then exit the sanctuary on the left side. The tabernacle in the old altar was open with nothing inside when you walked by. Remember that you only genuflect to Christ present in the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle and hen only outside of Mass, we do not genuflect to the tabernacle during Mass.

So my answer is; no specific gesture is necessary when entering or leaving the sanctuary during Holy Communion.

Ok, that makes sense. So, let me get this straight. From the point the Mass starts, to the point it ends, we do not genuflect when passing in front of the tabernacle or when entering or leaving the sanctuary? And outside of Mass, we do genuflect when passing in front of the tabernacle, or entering or leaving the sanctuary?

Thatis what I do and what I understand the liturgy documents to indicate.

Ok, are there signs of reverence we need to make during the Mass at all then? To the alter I’m thinking, when passing in front of it? Or behind it?

I think what the brother is trying to say is that if the eucharist is in the tabernacle then you should genuflect, but if there is nothing in there then there is no reason to genuflect.

That is what I understood him to say.
