There are those within The Church, dating back well before Vatican Council II, who decided and made it their cause to re-wind the Sacred Liturgy to pre- Pope Saint Pius V and the liturgy he advanced. Their ideology was partially founded in the Didache and the writtings of the early Church Fathers. The ideal Liturgy was to be very simple, plain and without adornments. They seem to hold the belief that much of the Tridentine Rite was overly complicated and falsly infused with much florish and pomp. Some of those ideology are still with us.
As Fr. David has stated, a case can be made from Sacred Scripture that Jesus would not have used “just a cup”. And this is supported by Jewish custom.
But regardless of what the Good Bishop feels, Rome has spoken. We have the duty to obey. I know that does not always sit well in these modern times, but obey we must.
