My mother is making a chalice pall and we are wondering what goes inside the cloth. Is it plastic?

Plastic is best, although I don’t know where you’d get it. Perhaps cut up an ice-cream container if it didn’t have any printing on? Failing that, sturdy white cardboard, Anything coloured would show through the linen in my experience.

Super-starched linen would probably be what was used back in the day. Plastic now, probably.

I’ve seen very effective plexiglass based palls. They are heavy and sturdy. They’re quite nice.

That’s an awesome pattern. It’s more modern, but with very clear overtones of the past, and it certainly has dignity. Maybe you could post pictures of the finished pall!

Try a craft store.
They often sell lightweight plastic sheets that can be easily cut to size. Sometimes even stationary stores will carry them. Look near the construction paper and that sort of thing.
Another option, although this doesn’t always work is to use the plastic “grids” for needlepoint crafts. The only issue here would be that the other cloth for the pall would have to be sturdy enough that the grids won’t show through or wear on the cloth.
Yet another option is to buy a (inexpensive) pall with plastic insert from a religious goods store or catalog, and use only the plastic. I’d recommend getting the largest one because you can always cut it down.

There (was) Chalice pall almost identical to the one in your link in my parish.
It got washed so many times the raised white embroidery faded.
Some earlier chalice palls had a stiff squared piece of cardboard inside to make it ridged.
Most new palls have stiff flexible plastic to retain their shape.
In my parish now the chalice pall is no longer used. A clean purificator and corporal drape over the priests chalice. These days you don’t even see a chalice veil. Oh well few things used in the Church once deemed sacred are no longer. Symbolism behind Sacred Vessels has gone out the bloody door.
If it isn’t taught nobody seems to care.- Status
