Chalices question

I noticed our Chalice in our parish has a compartment which is screwed shut and something rattles inside.

I asked the other MC and he said it is nothing, just a weight. Doesn’t sound logical to me but I didn’t ask more because he is kinda grumpy, and I ask too many questions anyways.

So I ask the collective knowledge base here, does anyone know what it could be? Both our Chalices have this.

It may be weighted to make it heavier and more difficult to tip over? 🤷

I assume that this is in the bottom. It most likely is a weight and just needs to be reattached to the bottom plate.
 
Why have a compartment at all and why would both of our chalices rattle?

Why not build the weight into the chalice design?

The more expensive chalices are built with bases much wider and heaver. The more inexpensive ones are usually a thin wall with a steel weight bolted or glued into the bottom.
 
That makes sense, I would assume we have the cheaper Chalices in my parish. They don’t take this sort of thing too seriously, (we are in California)

Ask the priest. Tell us what he says, now that you have made us curious.🙂
 
Probably something sinister, I think that is where the area’s Opus Dei monks keep the names of all the local protestants so they can keep them from reading their bibles.

I’m pretty sure Jack Chick said it was the Jesuits who were doing this. 😃

I was hoping it was something cool like a relic but it seems like it might just be a weight as even searching on the internet yields nothing for me.

I will ask an old retired priest I know who seems to know everything.
