What are the different uses of the term chance?

What realities does the concepts of chance describe?

How does math use chance?

How does science use chance?

How does common sense use chance?

Is there relative chance?

Is there absolute chance?

Thanks!

The term “chance” is used with four different meanings - which are not mutually exclusive:
  1. Coincidence
  2. Absence of cause
  3. Absence of design
  4. Probability
Chance refers to physical events and situations.

Mathematical calculations refer to probability.

Science is concerned with random events and probability.

Common sense uses chance in all four senses, e.g. “They met by chance” and “The chance that they would meet was negligible”.

Chance is relative in the sense that it is used within particular contexts.

Whether chance is absolute depends on whether you are a determinist or an indeterminist! It is impossible to prove one way or the other because no one is omniscient except God!

Any further help?
Chance - in the sense of indeterminate - cannot be absolute because the universe is fundamentally orderly and intelligible. If uncaused events occur - which is controversial - it is within a framework of order.
