Well, I don’t know if you should look there first, but it is a matter of taste. Merriam-Webster is my favorite, then Oxford, and then Collins.

By the way, I found this graph amusing (usage of refence, from Collins Dictionary):

These are the Merriam Webster and Oxford online dictionaries where I failed to find “refence”. Are they the same ones you use? Or do they have larger versions?

Yes, the very same. I think these three dictionaries are all pretty good but have different omissions, so I have gotten in the habit of trying all three, if necessary.

If that still doesn’t find (and validate) the word, I search the internet for the word to get some indication of how common it is.
