This is a tough one. I obtained a word, but I didn’t get it by my own bra(name removed by moderator)ower.

So I thought this might be a good time to talk about methods and perhaps rules.

If the challenge is pretty easy, I simply drag the letters around in my reply editor and change one in order to make a new word. If the challenge is difficult, I get out my letter tiles; I use Bananagrams, but Scrabble would work too. I’ll typically try different prefixes, suffixes, common letter groupings, and word fragments, and see what I can work out. It’s very gratifying to come up with an unexpected word in this way.

If the challenge proves impossible to me, I may privately explore the possibilities with the help of an online anagram finder. I would not enjoy actively playing the game using such aids, and it might be regarded as cheating, but in tight spots, it helps me to tell whether there is any way forward.

I would suggest that if we play the game with computer-based word-manipulation tools, we do so only when the game has been stuck for a sufficiently long time (24 hours? Maybe a little longer?), and that we disclose when we post a word obtained with the help of any such high-tech tools.
