More common these days is ‘race walking’. Have not seen this sport for ages, though.

Ahh, sorry. Not in the UK. Banned in 1986 for state schools, and in 1998 for private schools in England and Wales; 2000 and 2003 for such schools in Scotland and Northern Ireland respectively.

I recall one lad in my class who - when about to be caned across the palm - pulled his hand away at the last moment…causing the teacher to cane his own thigh. Ahhh…sweet laughter
