Changes in the English Missal

Has anyone heard anything about the changes in the new English Missal?

I heard that rather then say “…through my own fault” we will now say, “through my own fault, my own fault, my own grevious fault” because of the translation from Latin (Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa, Mea Maxima Culpa).

Also, the Gloria will be altered to “Peace to all God’s goodwilled people on earth” as opposed to “Peace His people on earth”.

Anyone heard anything else?

Since the English translation of the revised Roman Missal hasn’t been approved yet, nothing is binding so far. But, after having seen an earlier rough-draft of the translation, it appears that you are generally correct in your assumption.

Other noticeable changed in the English translation:
  • “And with your spirit” will replace the response “and also with you.”
  • “I believe” will replace “We believe” in the Credo.
  • “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb” will replace “This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper.”
-“But only say the word, and my soul shall be healed” replaces “But only say the word, and I shall be healed.”

All of these new translations better reflect the substance and meaning of the original Latin. Although it may be difficult for awhile to get used to the changes, it wouldn’t have been necessary if the ICEL would’ve done a better job to begin with.

This post amazed me. I am looking at my old 1950 Marian Missal. You know one of the type they modernized to bring the Church into the modern age? Guess what?? You’ll be amazaed at this but until Vatican II the responses went like this, ready???

In the Communion" BUT ONLY SAY THE WORD AND MY SOUL SHALL BE HEALED"

After “The Lord be with you”, Guess what"AND WITH YOUR SPIRIT"

EXACTLY THE SAME WONDER WHY??

WOW!!! Maybe the old translations were correct after all. . Maybe the Church is waking up . Maybe the Holy Ghost has spoken to the Pope and the Cardinals and the Bishops and they realize that maybe just maybe the changes brough forth by tampering with the language of the Mass weren’t such a good idea after all.

Hopefully the first of many steps to return the Church to it’s rightful place. The Lord indeed works in mysterious ways.

This is exactly the same also. You also stike your breast three times while saying this although I don’t see many people do it at N.O. masses.
 
I just went to the website Catholicinsoght.com. If I knew how post the link I would. EVERYBODY should read the articles they have there. If even half of what they report is accurate, The Novus Ordo Masses are in for tremendous changes, and they look like good changes too by the way. Check it out.
 
I agree that the prospects for improved liturgical translations are wonderful and long overdue.

BUT, without wanting to burst anyone’s bubble - it seems like this battle will be a very tough and (at least with the USCCB) an uphill one. Just read what appeared in the latest Adoremus Bulletin (AB).

The Bishops overwhelmingly (and seemingly defiantly too) elected Bishop Donald Trautman of Erie, PA (an eeeeerie place indeed matters liturgical and a breeding ground for dissent - it’s Sister Joan Chittister’s HQ…yikes!) as secretary for the USCCB Liturgy Committee. Bishop Trautman has been by far the most outspoken and embittered opponent of Liturgiam Authenticam. He has even urged people at a conference to resist “Vatican interference.”

According to the articles in the most recent AB, speculation about when the newly translated Missal will finally be in use runs the gambit - from late 2006 to possibly not until 2008 or 2009 !! 😦

It seems that now the game plan for bureaucratic opponents to Liturgiam Authenticam is to delay the new Missal as much as possible. Let’s bear in mind that the USCCB meets twice a year, and there could be endless votes for “proposed ammendments” and endless waits for Vatican “recognitios.” The resistence is tremendous - unless ofcourse, the Holy Father intervenes personally.

And I thought that the Vox Clara Comission, with Cardinals George and Pell on it, was specifically formed to assure that the translation of the Roman Missal be EXPEDITED!
 
Well, by a couple names on the BCL / Consultant list, I’d say we’re in for a long haul. Why can’t something be done to get our American Bishops in line with Rome? ‘Vatican interference’???

sigh.
 
Add that with a more generous use of Latin and tradition in the most solem moments of the mass and I wouldnt have hair stand on my neck during a NO service at my Parish.
