Since Lent started, I’ve gained ten pounds, because I gave up some foods I like and I’ve been overeating to compensate for them. Is it all right to change Lenten resolutions midway through the season to do something else? TY!

On the other hand, not overeating to compensate might be the best way to practice your Lenten discipline!

I know what you’re talking about, though. I overcompensate in Lent a lot in one way or another.

So since giving up food really hasn’t worked for you, why not try giving up something else…or adding some additional works of charity instead? Remember, the sacrifice is for your benefit to help you draw closer to Christ. If you simply replace the loss with something else it’s really not a sacrifice is it?

It is not sinful to break or change a Lenten committment…although that doesn’t make it ok…but I say that out of experience. I am guilty of starting Lent myself and then changing my resolutions because I wanted to indulge in a certain thing I gave up…I finally put my foot down and said “No More”…my love for God has to be what is most important, not my own selfish desires. What about recommitting yourself…pray and speak with God and make a new Lenten resolution. Instead of giving up something…why not add something to your life that will improve your walk with Christ…Lent is a time of renewal of our Baptismal Vows…why not commit yourself to Daily Mass…for every single day of Lent or to daily Adoration or to a daily Rosary…you may find that difficult to do due to time constraints, but I promise you, you will finish Lent with a closer relationship to God for having done it, instead of giving up Chocolate or some other preferred food…Give it a try. God Bless…don’t give up.
