Chanting Confiteor?

Why is there a chant setting for the Confiteor used in the EF Mass? Being that the Prayers at the Foot of the Altar are all spoken and never chanted, I’ve always wondered why this setting exists. After some light Googling, I found videos of servers singing the chant for the second confiteor. Is this a permissible practice? There doesn’t seem to be anything written on this, so I figured I’d ask!

Well even though it sounds heavenly, the melody didn’t just fall out of the sky!

It’s in the Liber Usualis, P. 110. It’s the tone for the Confiteor for Pontifical Masses. So yes, I would say it is a licit practice…

I have on occasion visited a neighboring parish that has a NO sung Latin Mass. They use this chant setting for the Confiteor.

The TLM rubrics call for the deacon to chant the Confiteor before communion at a Solemn Mass. This was theoretically curtailed in the 1960 rubrics, but it is permitted to be retained in places where it is a long-established custom. We do it in my parish at a Solemn Mass.

Yes, it is chanted in our High Mass, by the priest in a very low tone, but the second Confiteor is recited by the altar boys . Perhaps you are more familiar with the Low Mass where nothing is chanted nor is there any singing ( although about three to four hymns MAY be sung ).
