CHAPPiE (2015)

I haven’t seen it yet, but as a South African I am dying to.

I loved Neil Blomkamp’s previous work District 9 and Elysium. Sharlto Copley voices the title character and I enjoy his acting (he played Wikus in District 9 and Kruger in Elysium, as well as Murdoch in The A Team movie.)

The only thing that could count against it is that the members of the Zef Rap Band Die Antwoord, specifically Yolandi Vi$$er and the Ninja, are cast members. They WILL offend a lot of people on this forum I can guarantee.

District 9 was just fantastic, I thought. How’d it go over in South Africa? It seems clear that it was kind of mocking Apartheid history in many ways. I wish there were a sequel!

By the way, Searching For Sugar Man is a cult classic in America. That film ruled, too!

It was spectacular and a massive hit over here. Not since The Gods Must Be Crazy did a South African movie do so well at the foreign box office (and District 9 was a hundred times as profitable as Gods was).

Although the movie did parody Apartheid, it;s main target was xenophobia, which is becoming an increasing problem in South Africa (every know and then you hear of foreigners being beaten in the townships and having their businesses ransacked by hooligans). The alien “prawns” standing in for immigrants and refugees obviously.

Elysium was a parody of the US immigration problem with Latin America in a similar way if you think about it.

I haven’t seen Elysium, but I have a feeling it’s nothing special. District 9 is something different; I consider it one of a kind. You’re probably familiar with this, but if not, it’s just a great film that everyone should see. It’s a documentary, and it’s also one of a kind, to put it mildly:

I will keep a lookout for Searching for Sugar Man in my local DVD rental outlets.
 
Haven’t seen it. I thought District 9 and Elysium were just okay. Whenever films like that want to be taken seriously, IMO they need to give some life to both the protagonists and antagonists. Both of these Blomkamp films’ antagonists were deranged sociopath henchmen or the racist evil corporations or classist evil aristocrats who hired them. If you’re doing the corny black hat routine, that’s fine, but then know what you are. Also, Sharlto Copley is a talented actor. So don’t make the mistake of underdeveloping his characters. Especially when he’s the hero.
 
Saw Chappie today.

I wanted my money back.

So many plot loopholes, bad tech writing, not to mention the horrid concept of a persons 'consciousness transferring from one being or machine to another machine is just ludicrous.

Definitely wont suggest anyone watch it unless they like pain, deep psychological and emotional pain.

I have no idea how my son found this group, but I have seen a couple of their videos and they are offensive. “I think you’re freaky and I like you a lot!” is one of their songs. I hate their music. I saw the trailer for Chappie and I thought to myself that looks like the artist from South Africa. Doubt if I will see the movie.

And know you Americans have learnt the hard way why we South Africans find them so offensive.:D.

I can think of a lot of words to describe the members of the Antwoord. “Artist” is not one of them.
 
No offence taken. Disliking Die Antwoord does not make you any more anti-South African than disliking Justin Bieber makes you anti-Canadian. 😃

Disliking the Antwoord is not insulting to South Africans. If it were disliking Justin Bieber would be an insult to Canadians.
 
I really enjoyed the movie. I’m a big Blomkamp fan.

The only thing I think took away from the movie was Die Antwoord. I feel like the plot could have functioned just fine without them in it. The movie should have belonged to Dev, not Ninja and Yo-landi.

So how did the sensor helmet suddenly transform into a ‘consciousness transfer’ device?

I just like my movies to make sense and not annoy me, like when Dev saw his program finally compile with no errors and Shazzam! he pronounced it complete and ready to be rolled out into a live machine.

It doesn’t work that way. Clean complies are just the first part and after that you have to test functionality over and and over then integration over and over, etc.

And why would chappie be programed to act like a scared child? That was just dumb as he had security apps available from the start.

Anyway, I want my money back.
