Chapters on Showing Our True Selves

Hello,

I am looking for readings on showing our true selves to others and even to our own self. Does this exist? We all put up, well many of us put up boundaries and I am in need of direction on where to look.
 
Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the evil one. (Matt 5:37)
CCC 2153 In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus explained the second commandment: “You have heard that it was said to the men of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ But I say to you, Do not swear at all. . . . Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from the evil one.” Jesus teaches that every oath involves a reference to God and that God’s presence and his truth must be honored in all speech. Discretion in calling upon God is allied with a respectful awareness of his presence, which all our assertions either witness to or mock.

I think it helps. Is this saying be what you are, say yes or no and be straight with people. I may need some help with this.

More or less. Although this is talking about making oaths, Jesus is saying his disciples must be truthfull and then oaths are not necessary.

I don’t think it is a stretch to say we must first be truthfull to ourselves so we can be truthfull to others. Really living that way is another story.

So, what do you mean by putting up boundaries?

Putting up false fronts or appearances? Or puting expectation on yourself or others, maybe?

Yes, I am talking about different masks we wear. We wear masks for different people I suppose.

I am different with different people because there are many sides to my personality. Perhaps you aren’t putting up masks so much as showing different aspects of yourself. Is that possible?
 
How about: When Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, he said about him, “Here is a true child of Israel; there is no duplicity in him” (John 1:47)

It may take a bit of meditating on the passage, but basically Nathaniel is “transparent”–showing his true self.

Jesus gets very annoyed at people who are “whited sepulchres”. (Whited, meaning whitewashed.) Matthew 23:27.

You’ll also note that David was chosen by God, because men go by appearances, but God sees the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7.
