Charismatic Cardinals?

I’m just wondering if anyone is familiar with any priests who, coming from the charismatic renewal, have been chosen for the cardinalate?
 
All Cardinals are charismatic. The Sacrament of Holy Orders bestows several charisms, particularly that of teaching.
 
Check out Cardinal Suenens of the Netherlands or Belgium, I forget which. I believe he may be gone to his reward by now.
 
The personal spirituality of a bishop is no one’s business but his own. Just as your spirituality is no one’s business but yours.

Actually, the authentic Charismatic movement is quite in line with Catholic teaching. Pope John Paul II himself gave the movement his blessing. It’s right out of the New Testament. You can’t get more Catholic than that.

However, some liturgical abuses have crept up from that movement, as is also the case with the Neocatechumenal Way, which John Paul II also supported (the movement, not the abuses). Furthermore, inasmuch as the Charismatic movement is quite legitimate, there have been some followers who have gone beyond the bounds of what they are supposed to do.

For example, one of the priests didn’t want handswaying or other “anamolies” occuring during Masses for the Charismatic movement. One of the charistmatics told me, “Well, Father — doesn’t have the Holy Spirit.” This treads on shaky ground, in my opinion, because no one has the right to determine “who” has the Holy Spirit. In some groups in my neck of the woods, there are slight tinges of “pentecostalism” that have crept into the movement and that also presents a bit of a problem.

I personally don’t follow the movement nor do I care to do so. When somone tried to get me in, I told them that it was not something that I would particularly want to do. The person accused me of not wanting the Holy Spirit. This was an immediate turn off to the movement. It’s almost as though she didn’t understand that all of us are sealed with the Holy Spirit at Confirmation.

As far as Cardinals are concerned, the only one whose ecclesial movement affiliation (support) that I am aware of is Cardinal McGarrick (D.C. archbishop emritus) and his strong support for the Neocatechumal Way.

That affirmation was not an infallible statement, and is not to be taken as one. That’s all…take care.
