I have experienced resting in Spirit myself, and observed ‘holy laughter’ but I am confused… it is nowhere in the Bible, and as far as I know there is no official Church statement/document about it…

I’m not sure whether the “official church statement/document” you are looking for has to do with “holy laughter” as you put it or resting in the Spirit. The charisms of the Holy Spirit are mentioned in Holy Scripture as well as in the Cathehism of the Catholic Church. The officail documents of the Second Vatican Council also exhort ALL CATHOLICS to work in the gifts & use them for the “building up” of the entire Church.

I have found almost no mention of holy laughter (although I have experienced it myself to some degree) except possibly you could maybe make a case for when the apostles were thought to be drunk at Pentecost.

the reason why I say that is because I have seen people when then are drunk. And I have been drunk before (God help us).
There could be some connection there, but of course, as catholics, we know that not everything has to be mentioned in scripture to be true. Who ever thought people like Padre Pio would have gifts taht no apostle ever had: Bi-location and the stigmata. According to scripture, only Christ had those gifts.

“why not anyways”, because in this world if you start spouting off about the visions you have had, people think you lost your mind, thats why. But how do they “build up the Body of Christ”?

Top the Lord really does speak throguh visions I am sure that you can realize this from all that has gone before us.

Well with regard to how they build up the Body of Christ, That would take me forever to try to describe! Maybe trying to do that would be better done by some well written responses to this question and similar ones to it.

Well I guess then if I would try to answer some of the questions that you have brought up about how visions, prophecies, and tongues build up the Body of Christ, I would just say a little from what I hope I know truly:

For visions, think of th ebook of revelation. It is a long vision that was given to someone (the aposlte John). Without this vision, how much weaker would our faith in Christ be?

Prophecies are very similar. Just reading through the bible and removing all the times when a prophet said"thus says the Lord." would make the bible without much of the Lord’s guidance for the world.

Prophecies still continue today with such ones from St. Faustina, St. Bernadette and St. Francis of Assisi to name a few.

and okay here is where the renewal comes in. Tongues!

According to St. Paul, tongues build up the person praying. If you ask me how they do that, I would say that since tongues are a form of praising God, a person who praises God is really made closer to Him. Just imagine three people: one who never praises the Lord, one who does once in a while, and one who does alot!

Well I am sure that you understand what I mean. And tongues is a form of Praise. It is a wonderful gift of God that I hope and pray you receive!

With St. Paul I must really exclaim with that hope we share:

“I wish that all of you prayed in tongues!”

Does the renewal not include visions? Are visions to be kept to ourselves? Because the only fruits from the visions I have had have been ridicule and a diagnosis of mental illness because I was so open about them. I’m kept so medicated now , I can’t work for a living. So far I find these gifts a heavy cross more then a gift. I don’t see a “building up” going on at all, but a burden of the visions themselves along with the world reactions to such things. I don’t deny they exist, but wonder of it’s fruitfulness in todays world. The opposition has reached my own church and family regarding such “gifts” to the point I’m excluded from taking part in any ministry at church because I was told “you have enough on your plate”. My own family won’t discuss religion with me because I foolishly opened my mouth about my experience’s. This forum is my only outlet and even now feel excluded from it because of my lack of knowledge. So I’m reduced to statements disguised as questions as in this case. Can you sense my discouragement in “gifts”. I don’t like sticking my neck out and to be considered a nut, but here I am. Tim

Very few.

Though we have been a part of it for 30 years, our church in Ohio at the time, just outside Steubenville, was one of the very few with total church involvement.

We are still involved but through our Eastern Rite parish, but through the Latin Rite.

I have another question for anyone who can help. Are they any Catholic charismatic movements or groups among our suffering persecuted brethren in the Catholic Church in China?

This thread appears to be a particulalry good one. While I think it’s okay to disagree, you can still do it with love and kindness, not chastisement, as you point out! It is intimidating. Scanlon, of Steubenville) for sitting and praying in front of an abortion “clinic.” (It was called RESCUE because the aim was to prevent the abortions that were scheduled that day by blocking the clinic entrance. This form of passive resistance actually saved the lives of many babies.)

Most of the people who would risk arrest to save unborn babies were Catholics or evangelicals who took their religion seriously. When thrown together in prison naturally there were many questions and many answers. The upshot? The beautiful outcome of that time of serving and loving God together was that the priest reported “the evangelicals came out praying the rosary and the Catholics speaking in tongues!”

The result of loving, open-minded dialog is increasing unity, NOT division.

Well, a bit late to the board, but glad to have found the thread.

My bride and I first encountered the renewal briefly in VA in 1980, then through the course of moving about with Uncle Sam, were away for 26 years…2006 found our way to an annual conference through some persistent friends and the Holy Spirit, and to borrow a phrase from Ronnie Milsap, “What a difference He’s made in our lives.”

This past year we attended the annual conference again with Fr. John Hampsch as the presenter. 82 years young and so full of knowledge and the ability to teach … brought the message home for us very deeply.

Several posters have already given great reference to Thomas Aquinas and others about the specific position of the church on the manifestations of the Holy Spirit, but for anyone wondering and who REALLY wants church teaching first hand, I strongly suggest visiting this link and looking at some of the resources available. You’re Correct, it was Fr. Mike Scanlon TOR. He details this event in his book “Let the Fire Fall.” I think it is an excellent read for anyone curious about the charismatic movement. He talks a good bit about operating in certain gifts.

Ops, LOL, I meant new to Catholic Answers, not the state CA. Although right now I am wishing I was in the warmer weather. I was from a large prayer group, moved out of my state, and now am back in my home state. I am over an hour away from my dear, dear spirit filled prayer group family. So I only am able to be with them on occasions, but am always united in prayer with them. I am in search of another prayer group. My roots in the Charismatic Renewal go pretty deep, wide and for quite a long time now. I really can’t remember being any different it’s been so long. Thank you so much for your warm welcome. Hi everyone!

I’ve seen this thread popping up over the last couple of months, and felt compelled to post and ask a question. I’ve always been intrigued by the charismatic movement in the Church and have been invited to a couple of charismatic prayer groups at my parish, but I haven’t gotten around to attending any (yet). I hope you can help me out with some of my questions regarding a situation that occurred yesterday at my work.

I have a co-worker who is a Charismatic Catholic…very devout and on fire with the Lord. Yesterday she said that she wanted to talk to me about something. When we finally met up, she said that she wanted to spread the message to other Catholics she knew about the impending “three days of darkness” - the Catholic prophecy of the purgation of the earth through God’s wrath. She said that her and her other Catholic friends have been noticing “signs” of this coming event, and she felt that it was urgent that she tell those who are devout to be prepared, and she gave a timeline which is in the very near future. I encountered a couple of Catholics at work afterwards who were approached by her, and they’re really freaked out. One is practically in tears!

Now granted, I’ve heard bits and pieces about this prophecy. I know that the Church teaches that we really are not in the position to dictate when this is suppose to happen. I understand this is somewhat tied to the Second Coming of Christ. Personally, I have no problems with the mindset of keeping yourself in a state of grace, praying, and being prepared…scripture does state that one does not know when the final judgment will come, but that one should be prepared. Still, I was more than a little disturbed to know that her approach on this subject unsettled quite a few people at work.

So my questions are:

1. What’s the charismatic movement’s stance on this particular prophecy?
2. Not wanting to totally refute her, how should I broach the subject of the effects of her “warning” to others?

If there are any misconceptions I have expressed here, please correct me…I’m just trying to get an appropriate viewpoint on this as an “outsider” looking in.
