I’ve gone to a few Charismatic Women’s conferences over the past few years here in Arizona, and have even gotten involved with the group.

I do not speak in tongues, but I can ‘sense’ the faith in the ladies around me.

However, I’ve been told different things about the gift of tongues, but the one that really bothers me is that “everyone who asks for the gift will receive it” and so then I feel like there’s something wrong because I haven’t. Others have told me that everyone will get it at some point, it’s just a matter as to when they are ‘ready’.

** I like the explanation that everyone is given different gifts and that I shouldn’t feel ‘bad’ about not receiving the gift of tongues.**

Any thoughts for me???

Thanks,

Barbara
Amen!

And I am so sorry. Not everyone receives tongues, praying or speaking. I hate it when people make the comments like you have heard. People want to put God in a box and in their minds it is an absolute. Not! The only absolute is God is True - He is Love - His Love is Jesus Christ and His Lifegiving Holy Spirit, he is Triune - and he gave us the Most Holy Theotokos, Ever Virgin Mary. Everything else that Church teaches is absolute, because GOD IS!

As Pani Rose has stated, God gives the gifts to those he so chooses. That does not take anything away from you at all. Not everyone is called to be Pope, priest nun, or whatever. Each of us is part of the Mystical Body and is a different part. This is how we all serve God, i.e., as he wants us to serve, not as others think we should.

I heard of what the Charismatic movement has been doing in the mass and done with their claimed gift of the spirits. One of the moderator from an Indonesian Catholic forum I’ve been posting in wrote an article about the ‘mistakes’ of this movement. Such include their famous liturgical abuse, huge sale on imposition of hand, and the controversial speaking in tongues.
Hi Zavius, could you please let know where you read about the article?? and can you explain more what “mistakes” are? I’m from Indonesia and would like to know it more. Although I am not an active in charismatic catholic but I’m not anti-charismatic catholic either.

the actual reality is that anyone who asks for charismatic gifts from the Holy Spirit will ALWAYS receive, but he will receive the gift the Holy Spirit decides to give, not the gift he demands. The most commonly received gifts are the “boring” ones, teaching and administration, because those are the gifts most needed to build up the Church. One who prays for a charism for his own edification is not praying in the Spirit. The relatively minor actions of the Spirit, such as tongues and being slain in the Spirit are received by those who need such a sign that the gift of their submission to the Spirit has been accepted. Not all need those signs.

If you need tongues, tongues will be given. If you need interpretation that will be given, if you need prophesy, that will be given. As always the gifts are asked for and received ecclesially, not individually, so when the meeting asks, the meeting receives, and the gifts appear in the individual members for the strenght of the group and the purpose of building up the whole Church.

Another thing is the meaning of tongues, which is not always the “other language” speaking characteristic of the praise language of many (not all) Charismatic prayer groups or meetings. There is the specific gift which is a message from the Spirit, which is always accompanied by the gift of interpretation to another member of the meeting and is ALWAYS to be discerned by the leadership in the mind of the Church, as Paul warns.

Tongues also manifests commonly as a prayer language, but not always vocally. If you ask for the gift of tongues you will receive but in the manner the Spirit gives, which is not always either prophetic or vocal. It very commonly comes as a strengthening and deepening of one’s interior and prayer life, deeper communicatin with God in prayer and is noticed only gradually as prayer life improves. you may notice a move forward from vocal and rote prayer, to mental prayer, and from mental prayer to contemplation. The Holy Spirit prays in you “in unspeakable groanings” at times when you cannot on your own effort enunciate your prayers.

At other times it manifests as the gift of speaking, teaching, exhorting and explaining in a manner easily grasped and understood by others–even those who are resistant, not fluent in your language, not intellectual or personally attuned to your message. This comes when you are exercising you gift of communication in service of the Church. A catechist for example who has a habit of regular prayer to the Holy Spirit will find that even when she uses mundane methods of speaking and teaching, her students learn and understand at a level byond that which she has spoken.

This gift comes also along with the gift of knowledge. That is that the Spirit releases knowledge of spiritual things which He has given, through baptism and Confirmation, and allows the preacher or teacher to communicate that knowledge to listeners beyond their own natural capacities. For instance, I always pray before I teach that the listeners will hear what the Holy Spirit wants them to hear, through my words no matter how inadequate is my own teaching.

Back in 1975, when I returned to the Church, it was through the Charismatic movement, which was new in my area.

I remember a priest who was part of it saying, that this may be the very thing Pope John XXIII prayed for, when he said he was praying for a 2nd Pentecost, in the Church.

Before the Charismatic Movement, the Church was in pretty bad shape in my area. People were not going to Church. They were skeptical of Church teaching and whether the Church was truly the Church Jesus Christ established.

The Charismatic Movement, through the power of the Holy Spirit, put down those negative ideas and brought a renewal in the Church, that was much needed.

Just like the traditional Catholic church there are those who practice it wrong and misunderstand things.

The joy of being human is that we can make choices, we can make mistakes, we can repent, we can pray for those who make mistakes and most of all we can love them all regardless and remember that we are on the same team.

True forgiveness means that we forgive those who make mistakes so perfectly that we don’t want anyone else to think bad of them as we once did.

Perhaps we should forgive those in the Charasmatic movement who have it ‘wrong’ and instead pray for them?
