Hey
Code:
I am an Evangelical who desires to "revert" back to the Roman Catholic Faith. I love Contemp. music (I am not a Charismatic however). and hence was planning on attending a Charismatic Catholic church in my area. My question is, does music style effect whether it is a legit Roman Catholic Church? Or should I go to a more Hymnal type worship?

Hi Ben,

Welcome home!

You’ll probably find it difficult to find a specifically charismatic parish. Check out the parishes around you, though, as most of them will have different music styles at various masses. It’s not the music that dictates a valid mass rather it’s the fact that the priest conducts the mass according to the proper methods as per the written instructions that have come from the Vatican.

When I reverted from a Pentecostal Church several years ago I had similar concerns. I called the local parish and talked to the priest there to find out if I should attend a charismatic parish and what I needed to do to become Catholic again. He told me that all I needed to do was to go to Confession and start going to mass and that there was no need to find a charismatic priest or mass - neither of those things were really all that important. I didn’t like his answer, but in the end I found that he was right.

Since that time I’ve attended masses with all different types of music and I’ve found that my tastes have changed over the years. I’ve also discovered that the music style doesn’t really matter matter that much to me either, it’s receiving Jesus in the Eucharist that is truly the most important thing.

God Bless!

In my experience of viewing the Roman Catholic world, what you will often find is that there is a priest or two in each diocese that has a very special charismatic bent - and who holds Charismatic Masses. I know the Lafayette Diocese here in Indiana used to have Charismatic Masses out on a farm in the geographic center of the diocese about once a quarter (not sure if they still do).

I had a volunteer lay-person from the Archdiocese of Indianapolis working here in our Chaplaincy Office about two years ago, and for a decade he hosted charismatic masses in his house.

For the most part, because many Catholics are divided over the Charismatic issue, you won’t tend to find too many parishes that are actively and openly Charismatic - especially around my part of the world.

That being said, I noticed while they were doing interviews for Mercy Sunday from Stockbridge on EWTN yesterday that there were some ‘praise choruses’ being sung before Mass that I recognized from a few visits I have made in the past to various Protestant Churches.

I feel it’s hard to find a parish without a charismatic bend!!!
Find a traditional parish and you’ve found a jewel!

music style is not the predominant factor in whether or not worship style is charismatic. such a parish is usually pastored by a priest who is active in the Catholic Charismatic renewal, hosts Life in the Spirit Seminars, supports ongoing charismatic prayer groups and ministries, and holds regular healing services. Regular Masses will follow the Roman Missal and will not be different from Mass in any other parish, except that some people may pray quietly in tongues for a short time when congregational prayer and response is called for in the rite. There may be praise and worship music and praying in tongues before and/or after Mass. Music during Mass will be dictated by the liturgical season. You will probably find one by word of mouth, or by watching for announcements of Life in the Spirit Seminars.
