Hello,

Are Charismatic Catholics still part of Christ’ Church? Does the Pope consider Charismatic Catholics as a schism? I am currently Pentecostal and want to join the Catholic Church, but I do not want to give up my “Pentecostal” heritage (I still believe in the Baptism of Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues, etc).

Besides the obvious distinctions between the Charismatic Catholics and Traditional Catholics, is there any other difference (doctrinal wise)?

Yes! Charismatic Catholics are definitely part of Christ’s Church!

The differences between “Charismatics” and “Traditionalists” is the way they liturgically worship God.

It’s a great thing that you’re willing to use your “Pentecostal heritage” to help you in your journey towards Christ and His Church. However, I would also implore you to look at what both the Traditional movement and the Charismatic movement has to offer your faith. 🙂

Christ’s Church is ONE Church. There is no dispute on doctrinal teachings amoung the faithful Catholics in the Church.

Good luck on your journey and safe swimming. 🙂

In Christ,

JD

Thank-you. I went to a “traditional” Catholic Service a couple of times , and I like it, but I love the way Charismatic Catholic worship in Church, it makes me want to jump and run all over the Church 🙂 I guess thats my Pentecostal side talking 🙂

I’ll probably go to a traditional service one Sunday and the next Sunday a Charismatic service once I become Catholic.

Please pray for me for my Journey Home and thanks again!

If you decide to come to the Catholic Church, welcome!

The Pope enthusiastically embraces the Charismatic Renewal.
Remember, in Acts 2, that the beginning of the church was Pentacostal (Charismatic). The church by it very essence is Charismatic, because it is empowered and gifted by the Holy Spirit to bring salvation to the world.

I thought you might find this link helpful.

God Bless!

I also was a deacon in the AoG, and one of the things I think you need to be aware of is that unless any Charismatic group abides by the plain and direct direction of the New Testament in 1st Corinthians then it is neither good Catholic nor good Christian and is in fact subject to many errors and even deceptions.

Another thing to consider is that your comments seem to indicate that you thrive on the emotionalism of such services, and that is something that virtually all Christians are enjoined not to do.

Frankly the very idea that any service would illicit the kind of response that you describe, (“it makes me want to jump and run all over the Church”) is seriously problematic (to me at least) because the New Testament plainly tells us that all things must be done decently and in order.

I do not participate in Charismatic services, mainly for the reasons that I have mentioned here. Unlike you, I do not miss Pentecostalism at all. (And yes, I have in fact, several gifts of the Spirit and have/can pray and prophesy in tongues, discern and interpret them, as well as words of knowledge and prophecy “with my mind” [to quote St. Paul].)

Sorry I disagree . Its not about emotion, but the Holy Spirit. I agree that the Church must be in order, but I am not saying to run all around the Church breaking things and throwing chairs in the air. If the Holy Spirit directs one to jump and worship the savior, then so be it. The Holy Spirit is in charge not men. I can’t really say “no” to the Holy Spirit.

I’m glad that you have several gifts of the Holy Spirit. Keep walking in the Faith! 👍

I agree to some extent, brother. 🙂

However, we must also remember that the Holy Spirit doesn’t just guide our invidual actions but also guides the Pope and the Bishops as they lead and guide us in the proper ways to worship God.

The Holy Spirit is not just a gift for each Catholic but also as a gift to guide and inspire the whole Church. Christ promised that hell would not prevail against his Bride, the Church and He sent His Holy Spirit to guide her. This is why we must follow her. 🙂

By all means, jump up and down for the Lord and sing his praise. But also remember that there is a time and a place for jumping and there is also a time that we should "Be still and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10)

About 3 weeks ago, I went to this Healing Seminar for 3 days - each day we had a mass - a regular Catholic Mass - During the consecration, while the priest was holding up the Eucharist, a group of people praying in tongue.

I thought that was a bit disturbing to “Be still” moment.

Besides, nobody understood what this group was saying…and neither did this group.

Like CM, I am blessed to have been given some charismatic gifts. I happen to attend a charismatic Bible study which I thoroughly enjoy. But I do not see how jumping up in the Church fits in with the norms of a Mass. The Holy Spirit would NOT lead you in disobedience to what the Church has set down as the liturgical norms. So, if one is “jumping around the Church” when we are supposed to be kneeling, I assure you it is not from God. People are quite capable of working themselves into a frenzy and then saying it is God. But we must test everything. Something from God does not go against Church teaching. It is that simple.

I am only speaking now of Charismatics who go against the norms of the Mass. I have certainly been moved by the Spirit during Mass. Many times I have tears in my eyes or I silently pray in tongues after having received Our Lord. But shouting a “glory hallalujah” when the priest raises the Lamb of God would not be something that the Holy Spirit would inspire you to do.

I don’t agree with an individual/group speaking in tongues in a Church without an interpreter; Paul taught that an interpreter must be present. Demons can counterfeit tongues as well… Like Prayer Warrior said, “we must test everything”.

I agree. There is a time to praise and worship our Lord and a time to listen to the sermon…

Yup, and this mistake is not uncommon among such groups especially those who disregard their pastor’s advices. This problem dues to mostly lack of leadership and humility.

Yet the Word of God plainly says to discern the spirit and believe not every spirit, right?

If one feels “led of the spirit” to do something that is disorderly during Mass, is that really from the Holy Spirit?

As you say,“the Holy Spirit is in charge, not men”, yet it was that same Spirit of God that inspired St. Paul’s words to the Corinthians on this very topic did He not? However, one of the very important verses that Charismatics/Pentecostals seem to try to minimize in making their case for “freedom of the Holy Spirit” is the one that says straight out that “the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets” (1st Corinthians 14:32)

Now, I’ve heard C/Ps attempt to tell me that only applies to prophecy, but that is not the literal meaning of the verse, it is a literalist interpretation predominantly put forth by n-Cs, and I am sure that it’s wrong.

All I’m saying DM is that you need to be sure that whatever baggage you bring into our most holy faith… be sure that it’s correct.

Yep, that is precisely what I am talking about.

I had a similar experience at Mass once a few months ago & came within a breather of telling the guy to hush, but he shut up. Again…this was during the consecration. Way wrong.

I really wanted to let this group know after the Mass, but I didn’t.

Amazingly, the 3-day seminar I was attending, the priest said every important thing that many Charismatic groups have done wrong. He is coming to my parent’s hometown! The Charismatic group up there would have some good homilies/sermons from him. 🙂

Like I said, there is a time to praise our Lord and a time to hear the sermon. If the Holy Spirit directs one to jump during the worship service, who are we say the Holy Spirit is wrong? Now I agree, that is totally wrong if a priest/preacher is given a sermon that one should get out of their seat and run all around the Church and yelling “Amen”. However, I don’t see anything wrong in saying a quiet “amen” in your seat either.

I only know a couple of Pentecostal Church that have an interpreter. The rest allows an individual/group to speak in tongues all they want without an interpreter. Totally wrong. I remember someone told me that a person was speaking in tongues and when one interpret it, he were actually cursing God!

The problem with this is that it assumes that it is, in fact, the Holy Spirit moving us to “disrupt?” the liturgy. When, we can’t know this at all. This is why we need Holy Mother Church as a guide, brother. 🙂

I whisper Amen all the time if the Priest delivers a killer blow in the homily.

God Bless!

Be careful that you don’t confuse praying in tongues with giving a message in tongues. They are two different gifts. Praying in tongues is an individual worship prayer in the Holy Spirit not requiring an interpreter. According to scripture ~ 1 Cor 14, giving a message in tongues does require an interpreter so that all may know what the message is. 😉

Hi there all,

That is true Mary Ann about the difference between speaking in tongues (as in speaking) and praying in tongues. The Bible does say that there is a type of tongues that no one understands, only God. It does not require an interpreter. I can find the verse is someone wants to study it a little.

Tongues is a raising of our hearts and Spirit to the Lord. Singing His Praises could be another way of describing it. I remeber a verse from the Old testament when Saul (in the book of Samuel) had the Spirit rush upon Him and he was somehow changed for a time as He prophesied in the Spirit).

It can be shocking that St. Paul says there is such a thing to someone who does not pray in tongues though! I know this for a fact because when I first heard of tongues I was like !!! is this really catholic? but surprisingly, I found so much support from the Holy Church of God that I just couldn’t refuse that if the Church was saying that the Charismatic renewal is a true gift for the Church, then why should I refuse a true gift from the Lord?

And the Gifts are really true!

God bless you everyone and may Holy Mary protect you under Her mantle always.
