Charismatic Conventions and Vibrant Holy masses in eastern churches

In our Syro Malabar catholic church, there are two main charismatic convention centers. One is Divine Retreat Center Potta, Kerala India and other at Sehion retreat center, Attapady, Kerala, India. Here ten thousands of people attend the prayers, speeches, exposition of blessed sacraments.
I found that people are asked to cry loudly, roar, dance, clap their hands and pray vibrantly. I found a lot of miracles happen there. Cancer patients get cured, deaf people get healing, ulcers, tumors get healed.
I attended a 5 day convention conducted by Sehion retreat center in my place. Every day holy mass was conducted. Everyday one bishop in the syro malabar church was invited for conducting the holy mass. During the mass, bishop gave a small talk. I found from these bishops’ speeches that they are gainst such a charismatic convention. One bishop named Laurence Mukkuzhy of the Syroa malabar church indirectly in his speech said that this activity is a sin. All the bishops who gave speeches during holy mass did not congratulate or did not give a positive word on the priest who is Fr Xavier Khan Vattayil who presided over this convention.
Can anybody clarify about these charismatic conventions. Is it a sin to participate and conduct such activities, roaring, saying loudly ‘halleluih, halleluih’. In front of the blessed sacrament, people crying loudly. Also the holy mass is very vibrant compared to our ordinary mass.

well, i don’t know if it’s wrong, but it sure rubs me the wrong way. it sounds like protestant pentacostalism, except with the Sacraments.

If it is not in keeping with the wishes of the Bishop, and of the Synod, then I would recommend refraining from such activities, especially during the Holy Liturgy.

Although Byzantine myself, I was present for one healing Mass by Fr. Mathew Naickomparambill V.C. (from Potta) I am unaccustomed to the charismatic style used. Three people proclaimed a healing that day. I believe that some liberties were taken in introducing prayers into the Mass, other than in the homily period, and I don’t know if this was approved by the bishop. I wonder if “this activity is a sin” refers to such changes.

I think expressions of piety are not prohibited by the people, and the form varies by locations. It is the clergy that are constrained in how the words and rubrics of the liturgy.
