CCC 2003 states:

“Grace is first and foremost the gift of the Spirit who justifies and sanctifies us. But grace also includes the gifts that the Spirit grants us to associate us with his work, to enable us to collaborate in the salvation of others and in the growth of the Body of Christ, the Church. There are sacramental graces, gifts proper to the different sacraments. There are furthermore special graces, also called charisms after the Greek term used by St. Paul and meaning “favor,” “gratuitous gift,” “benefit.” Whatever their character - sometimes it is extraordinary, such as the gift of miracles or of tongues - charisms are oriented toward sanctifying grace and are intended for the common good of the Church. They are at the service of charity which builds up the Church.”

and CCC 768 states:
"So that she can fulfill her mission, the Holy Spirit “bestows upon [the Church] varied hierarchic and charismatic gifts, and in this way directs her.” “Henceforward the Church, endowed with the gifts of her founder and faithfully observing his precepts of charity, humility and self-denial, receives the mission of proclaiming and establishing among all peoples the Kingdom of Christ and of God, and she is on earth the seed and the beginning of that kingdom.”

and CCC 800 states:
“Charisms are to be accepted with gratitude by the person who receives them and by all members of the Church as well. They are a wonderfully rich grace for the apostolic vitality and for the holiness of the entire Body of Christ, provided they really are genuine gifts of the Holy Spirit and are used in full conformity with authentic promptings of this same Spirit, that is, in keeping with charity, the true measure of all charisms.”

Peace!

I returned to the sacraments through the Charismatic Renewal in 1978. Claretian Father John Hampsch was my spiritual director through many Charismatic retreats and missions. I was struck by his teaching that the purpose for church renewals (Charismatic, Cursillo, Marriage Encounter, etc) is to help us integrate deeper into church life.
Where the renewal brings persons to this level of understanding, there is joy through service, and acknowledgement of personal responsibility for one’s spiritual life through prayer and study.
Ya can’t beat that.👍

“The Will of God will never lead you where the Grace of God can’t keep you.”

AMEN!

It’s true that personalities matter here. I’m a bit scared of the tongues thing… I just can’t get the thing with using non-existent words as if it were a language, so often and… I mean, I just don’t get it. Sometimes they seem to think the use of made-up words in prayer equates the gift of tongues and I have a big problem with the logic of that. It just seems so easy to fake or to induce oneself into. Another thing I’m scared of is the laying of hands by lay people. Can anyone explain the two?

I think in the Church there has always been a ‘charismatic’ element in the sense some Christians centered their spirituality around the experience of the Holy Spirit. In Post-Apostolic times there were sometimes excesses in this movement (such as Montanism or Messalianism) but generally it was an accepted part of spirituality at that time, and the Marcarian prayer tradition is likely to be charismatic in origin. There are probably also exampes in the medieval and modern period, though that is outside of my knowledge.

According to wikipedia, Fulton Sheen, FWIW, was against it:
One prominent Catholic personality, Archbishop Fulton Sheen had this to say: “It is their spirit therefore that is gradually gradually unfolding itself in the Church. That is how we come to a theological knowledge of the three persons, and when we detach the spirit from the Church we are very apt to go awry. There just isn’t any such thing as a charismatic Church. There isn’t any such thing, for example, as a baptism of the spirit distinct from baptism. That is why Saint Paul in his epistle to the Corinthians Church, which was the Church that caused him so much trouble, he when he used the word Baptism he said: ‘Sure you are Baptized! You are IN Christ!’”

There’s no citation though.

I did to.🙂

As long as it does not detract from your fellow bretherens growth in the mass then there should be no problem with it.
