Charismatic prayer--what is it?

For scheduling reasons, I’m not able to join the Lay Carmelites, to my chagrin. But, I was reading the July calendar in my parish’s bulletin this afternoon–and they have weekly Charismatic prayer group meetings, and sessions. Can someone enlighten me to this type of prayer? I’m used to cerntering prayer…and focusing on sitting in silence with the Lord. I also love the Rosary and the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy…but am intrigued with this group, and would like to explore. It also takes place at night, so I will be able to be faithful and commited to it, should I join up.

Wow–that is really something…I would love to experience the miracle of Pentecost…during prayer, during the Rosary, I feel the Holy Spirit upon me…I wonder how this differs. If there are specific prayers involved…I’d like to get the book dicussed in this link. thank you for providing this info!!!

Here are a couple of articles about the movement.
They are having a Charismatic conference in my Diocese soon and I’m debating about attending or not. I have never been to any type of Catholic Charismatic prayer service but have attended protestant pentacostal services years ago, never felt lead or drawn into it. May be rerwarding though.

Please, do more studies on this subject. Do a search using “praying in tongue”.

While it is nothing wrong to experience the mircal, but would you love to have strong faith without any natural experiences?

Hey whatevergirl. I tried the charismatic thing long ago. Wasn’t for me. Too much emotion spilling out that seemed forced. I prefer the contemplative experience of quiet prayer. But that’s just me - your experience may be different.

Its not quiet mental prayer, that’s for sure.

I was involved in the Charismatic movement when it first came to the United States. Father Ralph Diorio, was a parish priest in my town, and began his Charismatic prayer and healing meetings there.

It was good, but it also drew out religious fanatics, who claimed miracles at the drop of a pin. I found some of the prayer meetings over emotional.

That being said, I have not been involved with Charismatic on at least 20 years, so it may be different in today’s world.

However, a group of Charismatics came to our OCDS community. None of them stayed. The reasons they gave were that it was too quiet, too ridged with rules, too much reading of subjects they found difficult, i.e. St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross, and they didn’t like The Liturgy of the Hours at all. From what I understood, their group was the typical dynamic, “praise the Lord” and “shout for joy” type of group. Hardly what an OCDS meeting would provide.

Charismatic prayer groups may vary, so like I said, let God be the guide.

i actually enjoy quiet prayer…contemplative prayer, as well. i would like to explore…nothing more, nothing less.

I read a month or two ago that Mother Angelica has some experience in Charismatic prayer. She was initially against it (on a personal level, not a theological level), but was shocked to find out she felt closer to God.

That said, it’s not my style.
