I know that there are already posts about the charismatic section in the Church. However, I would like to know the history of the charismatic presence in the Church from the first century onwards. I was talking to a fellow Catholic and she said its always been around, I’m not at all familiar with this and was wanting to know the history of it.

But if you like reading, you can check out a book by Kilian McDonnell, O.S.B. and George Montague, S.M. called Christian Initiation and Baptism in the Holy Spirit: Evidence from the First Eight Centuries. These two are Catholics, scholars, and I think both are priests.

For a broad history of the Charismatic presence from first century onward, one begins with Acts and then seeks out the teachings of St. Paul especially his list of nine classical gifts of the Holy Spirit along with his description of the common gift of praying in tongues. Then one searches the writings of the Early Church Fathers.

The book Itwin recommended in post 3, *Christian Initiation and Baptism in the Holy Spirit, **Evidence from the First Eight Centuries, *ISBN 0-8146-5009-0 is a thorough study of “Baptism in the Holy Spirit” and the charisms in the early Church. It includes writers representing Latin, Greek, and Syrian cultures, almost the whole of the Mediterranean seaboard.

At the same time, there was a decrease of people praying in tongues. Historians have reasons for this; but, for purposes of reality, it doesn’t make any difference what happened because in 1967, the Holy Spirit renewed the common Gift of Praying in Tongues.

Nonetheless, looking at the charismatic presence per se, a number of the Classical Holy Spirit Gifts (1Corinthians 12: 4-11) have been continually present in the lives of the saints and others who are unnamed.

A. The Word Gifts (The Power to Say)
**a) **The Gift of Tongues – whereby the person gives God’s message, in a language unknown to him, for the community present.

b) The Gift of Interpretation – whereby a person, after the use of the gift of tongues, gives the general meaning of what the person has said, or a response to what has been said. Interpretation can also be used privately in conjunction with the gift of prayer tongues.

**c)**The Gift of Prophecy – whereby the person gives God’s message in the vernacular for the community or for an individual.

B. The Sign Gifts (The Power to Do)
**a) **The Gift of Faith – which enables the person at a given moment to believe, and to call upon God’s power with a certainty that excludes all doubt.

**b)**The Gift of Healing – which enables the person to be God’s instrument in bringing about the well-being of another, on one or more levels, spiritual, psychological or physical.

**c) **The Gift of Miracles – which enables a person to be God’s instrument in either an instant healing or in some other powerful manifestation of God’s power.

C. The Intellectual Gifts (The Power to Know)
**a) **The Word of Wisdom – whereby a person is granted an insight into God’s plan in a given situation and is enabled to put this into words of advice or of direction.

**b)**The Word of Knowledge – whereby a person is granted in insight into a divine mystery or facet, of man’s relation to God and is enabled to put this into a word that helps others to grasp the mystery.

**c)**The Gift of Discernment – whereby a person is enabled to know the source of an inspiration or action, whether it came from the Holy Spirit, his own human spirit or from the evil spirit.

**Note: **the Gift of Tongues which is listed first is not the same as praying in tongues.
 
The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines charisms (CCC 2003) as special graces.
“They are oriented toward sanctifying grace, and are intended for the common good of the Church. They are at the service of charity which builds up the Church.,” whatever their character.
The most prominent charism manifested since 1967 is the gift of tongues. However, there are many other charisms that have been manifested throughout Church history.
Church history is a history of miracles. Read the stories of stories of Saints who have been gifted with healing. Healing is a charishmatic gift.
Read The Flowers of St. Francis,which is full of examples of charisms in action, even if the term charim is never used.
 
Those of us who are members of the Charismatic Renewal often talk about the charisms as gifts that we received by virtue of the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation.
With priests, we often see zeal in preaching the gospel manifested. This is one of the gifts he receives through the Sacrament of Holy Orders.
This thread has to do with charisms manifested in the past. I wanted to use as my example St. John Vianney and his charism, or gift of reading the hearts of men. He received this gift by his openness to the Holy Spirit through the Sacrament of Holy Orders. It is reported that he spent as many as 18 hours a day hearing confessions from the many people who flocked to him.
