Charismatics and the Traditional Latin Mass: Do They Mix?

Can one be both a “Charismatic” Catholic and attend only the TLM?

Or are they mutually exclusive?
 
Hi,

If you are speaking of worship styles, then the answer is they are mutually exclusive, since the charismatic style music and prayer is not the traditional style.

If youare asking is one can attend charismatic style prayer meetings, but only Latin Mass, certainly this is possible, but I have never heard of anyone choosing that option.

Do you want to discuss anything more specific?

I know of charismatics that would choose the TLM if it were offered in their area.

How are you defining “charismatic”? Charismatic style worship is High praise, and never in Latin.

Worship
Each Mass is begun with a time of praise and worship in which we focus on God and His love for all. It is a time when we leave behind the cares of the day and look only to God. Music is a vehicle with which we unite as one body as we join to offer praise to God for all that He is.

Raising Of Hands
Raising of hands often occurs during the worship as a sign of freely opening ourselves to God to receive His blessings and offering ourselves to be used by Him in whatever way He wishes. “Thus will I bless you while I live; I will lift up my hands in your name.” (Psalms 63:4)

Clapping
Clapping also naturally results as an expression of the joy we experience in God’s presence. “Come everyone, and clap for joy! Shout triumphant praises to the Lord!” (Psalms 47:1)

Holding Hands
Holding hands with those next to us is a sign that we are "all in this together. "As a family of believers, we join to lift one another in God’s presence. As we bless one another, we are blessed. We generally hold hands during the “Our Father” as a sign of our unity while we pray as we were taught by Jesus.

Word Gifts
A time is usually set aside following Holy Communion to reflect on what the Lord has done for us, and to listen for His word spoken through someone in the assembly. Often a person will receive a thought or an “inspiration” he or she senses the Lord wants the assembly to hear. This may also be sensed in the form of a scripture verse. This work is often first shared with a “word gift group” who has gathered prior to the Mass for prayer and discernment. Those who feel they have received a word to be shared are asked to submit that message to the prayerful discernment of the word gift group before speaking it to the people.

I have attended many charismatic masses. The word gifts are given during the time where normally “announcements” are made.
 
It seems perfectly possible to me that someone could find great value in charismatic prayer meetings and still prefer the EF of the Mass. One doesn’t have to limit oneself to only one kind of prayer.

Exactly. Would the Apostles prefer the EF if they were alive today? Quite possibly (at least some of them - I can see James being more trad than the others somehow 😃 ).

Were they all endowed with gifts that we call ‘charismatic’ today? Probably - the account of Pentecost would seem to indicate as much.
 
Hopefully all of us are charismatic, if you are using the term in a generic sense as meaning using the gifts of the Holy Spirit which were given to us at Baptism, and intensified at Confirmation.

But if you are speaking of the Charismatic movement within the Catholic Church (CCR), the worship would not include a TLM.

Many of us do mix and attend both, but a Charismatic style Mass would be in the vernacular and have different music, and high praise.
