EWTN is my source. Call them.

EWTN’s own promotional information states that it has become the largest religious media network in the world. It transmits 24-hour programming to more than 123 million homes (146 million homes as of February 2008) in 127 countries and 16 territories on more than 4,800 cable systems (5,200 cable systems as of February 2008), wireless cable, direct broadcast satellite (DBS), low power TV and individual satellite users. According to a 1994 cover story in the National Catholic Reporter, “Mother Angelica claims to reach 38 million homes in 49 states, and every Latin American capital 24 hours a day, though EWTN has made no scientific studies to measure who really watches. The network does this with a staff of 124 for about $8.5 million a year, while raising about $25 million a year in donations.”[5]

Unless its backed up by an independent company, you can’t rely on what EWTN claims. I’m not bashing EWTN in any means, its on in our house most of the day. And even if those numbers are correct, each cable company still has to take into account what is popular and what isn’t in their own individual markets and make decisions accordingly. Its not a conspiracy either against EWTN, my local cable company actually dropped a few of the ESPN channels because they didn’t have the ratings in our area.

I live in the St. Louis area. I am very angry that Charter has done this. This will impact the catholic elderly in our area, some who rely on it to watch Mass, because they can no longer physically attend. Most can’t afford to pay anymore for cable then they already are. This has been available from the cable company for more than 20 years in our area. Not necessarily charter, I think it has changed hands over the years a few times. It has a cable monopoly in this area. I do get channel 152 on my main tv, but I think it is worth the time to contact charter and ask them to put it back. My father is 80 and when I told him, he also is upset. This is the 3rd channel that they have moved to the upper tier, which cost more, and the elderly are on fixed income. I

Coming from someone who barely has a TV on much less Cable…

With or without web access - with or without TV - my religious life isn’t dependent on it. I’ve never seen EWTN TV - ever.

Although, admittedly, they are indeed another source of media for exploring and participating should they be explored.

Our faith has sustained many centuries with the web or cable tv not to mention many other “much more serious” events.

Subscribe to magazines, newspapers, EWTN websites (and links thereof i.e. Father Corapi) and enjoy! Financially support your local Catholic Radio program (assuming you have one). Read the bible, get dvd’s, and a million other things you have outlets to.

ALL forms of media are a business and without money (i.e. subscribers and advertisers) - none exist.

Take a look around the country and see how many Catholic Schools and Church’s are closing… Wanna guess why??? Money!

Dish network has EWTN as part of the basic package, it is less expensive than cable.

Switch to Dish.

Come on JenniferJ. We can have a civil debate here without getting mean.
You’re right, I shouldn’t have been rude, and I apologize. however others shouldn’t jump on those spreading this info like we are stupid about business and how capitalism works. As consumers we DO have power. WE HAVE THE $$$.

I’m trying to figure out why it’s wrong to ask a company (esp one that created a monopoly in our town) to provide a service that is free for them and helps people in the community? How is it wrong for people to band together to ask the company to provide it? How is it wrong to then tell others about it and ask them to drop that company and find another? This is a free market and people are doing just that. As I see it, our K of C gave Charter a fair shake, the company said no, so we are advising people to get Dish (which Kage is right, it’s cheaper). There is NOTHING wrong with people voicing their displeasure and attempting to get the company to provide the wanted service through asking and social pressure. EWTN is very successful and will continue whether Charter carries them or not. The only people who suffer are shut-ins who count on EWTN for Masses and spiritual programming–it’s a shame that a company can’t provide such a service to the community because $$$$ is more important.

I don’t think anyone is saying that someone shouldn’t petition a company when they feel a situation is warranted. People are pointing out to you that the decision behind moving EWTN from channel 25 to 152 may be only for financial reasons and not for the anti-Catholic bigotry that you think they did.

I never said it was anti-Catholic bigotry. You have the wrong poster. Thank you.

Quite some time ago my cable co. COX lumped several of the religious channels together including EWTN and put them on high channels in the 200’s someplace. I still got EWTN because I still had the digital box. I had to cut back economically as many have recently and turned in the digital box. I miss EWTN. But I listen to their radio station on the Internet, the station does not come in on my radio though but having on the pc is better then nothing.

So how come the popular Protestant channel gets channel 6. Do they pay for that?

Channel 152 is a digital channel and not part of the basic cable channels as was channel 25. This is really awful. My 86 year old mom just got a new flat panel TV, and they want her to get a digital box!
If she got a flat screen it’s probably HD so most people want to get HD programming with an HD TV. Some don’t have HD tuners for over the air so you have to get a cable box.

Me personally I switched to Dish years ago, EWTN is on 262 right around the fundie channels, just past the News.

What’s funny is that nothing decent is on below 100… I always start flipping at 120 (which is History HD).

To the OP though, a lot is probably about dollars and cents not the HC bill… at least what is on EWTN is factual, if they wanted to ban station for being against the bill they would have to start with Faux News and it’s misinformation first.

Dish Network and DirectTV both have come killer specials right now, both offer local channels and come with a handy DVR as well. In fact Direct TV is almost half price for the first year right now… if you have an HD set, Satellite is much better than cable and on either you will definitely get EWTN crystal clear!

Frankly if I didn’t have a DVR, I wouldn’t ever get to watch TV except for SpongeBob.

She would have to get a box, according to Charter. They have switched channels without notifying the consumers. She IS paying for cable service, it’s not free. I feel bad for the elderly, it’s hard for them to switch services and figure out how to use all the gadgetry.

I use U-verse (with a DVR) for internet and TV. I never watch live TV anymore.
