Chastity and homosexuality

Wow, have I been in your shoes, my friend! I too had a fallen-away Catholic friend who wanted to start going with me to Mass. He is a practicing “activist” homosexual who, like your friend, not only sees it as normal, but also views porn and abortion as just fine. The first few times we went together to Mass he did not receive Communion. But one Sunday, right before I left the pew to go up for Communion, he grabbed my arm and told me he believed God had forgiven him and he was going to receive the Eucharist. Which he did. That day and for the many months after. After that first Sunday, he asked me what I thought of what he had done and I told him that since he had not been to Mass in years and obviously had not been to Confession, that he should not have received. I directed him to several confessors in the diocese that I know are wonderful and supplied him with the Parish bulletins. I even invited him at Christmas to the Communal Penance Service. He was not interested. It really tore me apart. And we hadn’t even addressed the issue of homosexuality! We touched on porn and abortion, but this man was unmoveable. I asked several priests for advice and they all said the same thing. I had done all I could and I needed to leave the rest to the Holy Spirit. This friend eventually moved out of state and the last time I spoke with him months ago he had joined a “Gay and Lesbian Ministry” at a Catholic Church in his new town. Considering the city he is in, I doubt this ministry is interested in teaching the Church’s position on this issue.

Some folks make up their own rules and when you look at the big picture, we are not in charge. You can share the truth, but you can’t make a person believe. I still pray for my friend but the rest is in God’s hands.
