Is it a sin to refuse to have sex with your husband for the reason that you don’t want to have any (more) children?

It is never a sin to refuse sex! God intended sex to be a loving union of two partners. If one partner doesn’t really want that union and bond, it’s a no-go.

Does your hubby agree with this idea?

Why is more in brackets? If one has no children and is refusing sex for this reason, not to have children, then your marriage is null and void. Thus you would be disdaining the purpose of marriage, and commiting sin.

St.Paul said in effect that when new converts come in they should abstain from relations only if both agree, but do not do so if you are going to be burning with desire for one another.

It can be a sin to refuse your husband his marital right without a just reason.

In addition to that, even if your husband was on board with abstaining, if the two of you lacked a serious or grave reason for doing so (health, economic, social reasons, etc…) then abstaining could still be sinful.

As Catholics we are called to be open to life and you can take great comfort in the fact that God know’s what we can handle in this life and would never give us more then we could bear 🙂 .

It can be.

It is serious to refuse the marital embrace. Periodic abstinence (through natural family planning) is not sinful when the ocuple has a seirous reason to avoid children at the time, and both spouses agree to abstain.

Yep. Here are a few older threads on the topic (most recent first). I just did a search on “marital debt,” so I am sure there are many other threads on the topic to read, with different phraseology used.

Well, why do you not want any more children? If it’s a danger to your health, such as having another child could kill you, then abstaining from sex is acceptable. If you’re practicing NFP for legitimate reasons, that is okay. Otherwise, there really isn’t a good reason and is most likely a sin.

I see now from your others posts on other threads that you are still discerning your vocation as a religious, a single person or a married person with kids, so I am sorry for inundating you with links on the topic in my prior posts. :o But, maybe the discussions will be helpful to you in discerning your vocation.

this really seems like an odd question to be asking coming from someone who isn’t married. You need to understand what the Church teaches regarding marriage and the marital embrace. You and your spouse exchange the right to intercourse in marriage. So, no you cannot refuse to have intercourse with your spouse. Moreover, you shouldn’t WANT to reject your husband sexually.

Regarding spacing of children, you can do so via natural family planning by mutual consent.
