So today during a psat, for those who don’t know what that is, it’s a practice of a sat but still a big test. A friend of mine asked before we took another test if I could put my answers to the side of the desk so he could copy them down. I hesitated when he asked me and when the test came up, I let him look cause I didn’t want to feel like I was ignoring him or pushing him away. I just want to know if this is a sin. I kinda felt like is was wrong but wasn’t sure if it was a sin or not. Anything will help, Thanks.

It’s dishonest. As a high school teacher (I administered the PSAT today!!!), I know that it is against test regulations to “give or receive assistance.” In the New Testament, we’re told to “put off falsehood” (Ephesians 4:25). You were helping someone else falsely claim your work as his own in violation of test rules. In brief, you acted falsely to unfairly help someone else.

What your friend did was wrong. By cheating he was lying to those who gave the test. He was falsifying his qualifications for further education.
Yes, that is a sin.
By letting him read your answers you were helping him sin.

I don’t know how severe a sin it was for you. I don’t know the state of your soul. Also it seems clear you were trying to help him, not cheat on your own behalf. If you’re a Catholic, then I think you must ask the priest in Confession.

Yes. Cheating is a sin. The cheater and the one who facilitated the cheating both did something wrong.

It is a sin. It broke a promise you made at the beginning of the year to not cheat and it helped your friend to lie about his knowledge.

Mention this when you are in confession.

This is a good example of why cheating is wrong. This won’t be true in every circumstance but now your friend won’t have a true measure of how he will do on the SAT and how to prepare. And if his fake score helps him win scholarships or acceptance to a school then it’s theft.

Dishonest? Yes. Atrocious? No.
Here are few things to remember:
  1. It was a practice test not the real deal.
  2. You’re just lucky you weren’t caught!
  3. These standardized tests are largely a joke and I went to college with people who did poorly because they had no dedication.
Seriously, I’ve seen people who were brilliant not get their degree yet the dedicated “dope” finishes! Let me tell ya’ college professors aren’t idiots and you’ll never get away with test cheating or plagiarism. High school is quite different.

As others have said, yes it is wrong, but thankfully there is the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We bring our sins to the Lord in Confession, and we can be reconciled to him. So go to Confession, and get lots of grace. 🙂

Cheating is cheating. By agreeing to assist him in this action; you are just as culpable in the dishonesty. No other way to put it.

Perhaps this is the first time a friend ever pressured you to assist him in cheating, and you didn’t know how to say no. Figure out how to say no. Figure out how to be comfortable saying no, for the next time anything like that happens. You’ll be fine.

I agree with this. Unfortunately, this sort of thing happens all the time in high school, and even college. I think it’s obvious you feel sorry about it, so just be sure to recall this feeling of sorrow the next time this happens

Yes, aiding someone in sin (helping your friend to cheat) is itself sinful. Bring it up in confession, you’ll feel a lot better afterward.

The PSAT is a practice test for the SAT, but it is used for more than just practice and is a “real” test in its own right. A good score can earn you a National Merit Scholarship. Furthermore, schools use the PSAT as an academic performance measure for their 10th graders and some 9th graders. Schools take this very seriously, so seriously that test administrators have to fill out reports for even minor testing violations.

I assume it’s a sin? I don’t know. But letting someone copy off your test can lead to disciplinary action against /you/. As great as it is to help your pals, you should be defending yourself too.

It takes two to cheat.
I remember in high school that if someone was looking at our exam papers, we would be equally guilty even if we didn’t conspire to cheat with the cheater because it’s our responsibility to ensure others aren’t able to see our paper.
